Post-cat O2 sensor

Recommended Posts

Went to run an errand in my '95 NA auto import and could hear some weird noise as I drove. Stopped and found that the post cat O2 sensor was dangling by its wire and bouncing along the road surface.

On inspection the centre bit of the sensor has detached from its oval mounting boss (which has largely disintegrated). I understand the post cat sensor doesn't do much so I have stuck it back into the exhaust hole with some metal epoxy putty. The old mounting boss fixings (8mm bolts) look like they will be a bit of a challenge to remove for sensor replacement so planning to keep it like that for now.

Anyone else encountered this issue?

The exhaust gas temperature sensor is there to feed back to your ECU things like the engine is running too lean - its getting too hot down here. So, it would have an input into the fuel air ratio to prevent component damage from excess heat. Not all cars have exhaust gas temperature sensors, even fewer back in the 90's, so its an added safety feature that you can probably live without until you have a problem that goes by undetected..

Thank you for all the answers. For now, I have secured and sealed it in place with Evostick metal epoxy. Obviously a bodge, but it seems to be OK for now.

I ordered a replacement from eBay (automotivepartsspecialist), but after a few emails querying model etc   they cancelled my order. Now one on the way from Australia (Zivor).

I'm thinking, as others have said, that this isn't a critical sensor. Still not sure if it is an O2 sensor or an exhaust gas temperature sensor as Rider suggests!

Anyway, no engine lights or running problems and sail through the emissions tests....

Thanks Evinx and all others responding. Looks like the EGT sensor (89425-19505) is pretty difficult to source. Discontinued on all sites I checked. So will stick with the metal epoxy bodge for now. Good to know the bolts can come out with the right techniques though 👍

EGT sensors are fitted BEFORE the first cat on Jap spec TT models. I don't recall having seen any NA Jap specs with an oxygen sensor after any cat either, just UK /EU model TT's

A photo or two showing the thing, the number of wires to it and its location would be interesting.

Lower part of the NA 1st cat. 2 wires and goes through the floor pan into the driver footwell

That's the CAT overheat sensor in case someone puts leaded fuel in it. It's a simple K type thermocouple inside a metal probe and can be tied up out of the way, I usually drill the return flange on the chassis rail and tye wrap it up there, although you can stuff it behind the cat heat shield and hope for the best ;)

I actually have one somewhere but the wiring was hacked off. Metal bit and proble are intact. If theres enough wiring on it to splice into ill post it out to you

evinX  that's really kind of you. Right now fairly content to leave it as it is. However, if you come across the spare one  I wouldn't say no to it as I could easily splice it into the existing wiring. If you do, and can bothered to post it, then I'll make sure you aren't out of pocket. Will dm my address if it turns up. Thanks for this offer 👍

Photo of the bodge 🙂
