shaky
I will be booking my car in for a service soon, and a new cambelt kit, is the water pump on these cars strong or should i change it ? it's a big price so just needed to know ? Cheers .
Mike2JZ
Depends how old the current water pump is. If its never been changed then probably worth doing as the cambelt needs to be off anyway.

rider
A thread on a US site suggested that the water pump should be changed every time the cambelt is changed. I never followed that advice, the car has just had its 5th cambelt fitted and I decided to get the garage to change the water pump and thermostat and idler and tensioner whilst there. All those part were original and frankly they looked good for another 25 years. There is no play in the water pump bearing, like none. The OE water pump is around £150 and according to the garage a right pain to fit. So expect pushing £250 including fitting at a garage. At least I know my pump was replaced with a Toyota pump and they may not always be available, though I believe the current pumps use plastic vanes and the originals were metal. So I suspect the newer pumps won't age as well as the original.
shaky
Garage i use will want the parts ready for fitting because they are busy , got no choice but to order one really if they find play in it , i'm going to start collecting parts now it's getting hard to find oem new parts , i'll make sure it has metal fins too , and the price i found was £250 for just the pump ? full cambelt kit come to £310. anything else i need ?? rider
Toyota are cheap enough for the belt. The rest I sourced elsewhere. The pump came via TCB for a genuine Toyota. £120+VAT from memory. If Toyota are using plastic fins then you'll have plastic fins if you want OEM. If you aren't bothered about OEM then places like RockAuto sell generics with prices starting from only £12. I just wanted a Toyota part seeing the first pump lasted 24 years with no issues.
mattdavies
If you search it there is a part number for just the front part of the water pump, the rear half is basically just a casting. Its half the price of the full pump and will require less labour
Swampy442
Its up to you really, change it while its right in front of you, or wait until it lets go, strip the front of the engine to get it out and replace it. Know what I'd do.

I believe you have to find the Aisin Part number as MR T doesnt sell it in two halves only as a whole

mattdavies
Aisin # WPT-038 according to this thread: https://www.supraforums.com/threads/replacing-only-front-half-of-water-pump.997641/
mellonman
I went with a metal asin one . But the plastic ones have better fine design. If redoing it again I would pick the plastic design

Frank Bullitt
To further confuse matters, I went with CW’s recommendation and replaced the plastic impeller pump with a metal version. Give TCB a shout for the best price and also give https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,1995,supra,3.0l+l6+turbocharged,1278626,cooling+system,water+pump,2208 a look. They usually have a 5% voucher floating around on the net, their postage can be a little expensive and you have to factor handling charges and import duties et cetera.
