How-To Clean & Test Transmission Solenoids & Fit New Strainer

 

 

Drain sump and remove the nineteen 10mm head pan-bolts, start them gently, threads are open at the back and can sometimes be seized in, if so use WD 40 and be careful

 

Using a "broad tool" prise off the pan, a blunt 2" wood chisel is perfect for this job

 

 

Easily do-able with the car on axle stands

With sump pan removed the solenoids are easily get at-able, 3 in GE and 5 in GTE

 

Tip: Each time fit new strainer, pull out solenoids and give them a blast with aerosol brake-cleaner

Top one(s) are "normally closed" and bottom two(s) are "normally open".

T.T. valve-body with strainer (Gear-change and lock-up solenoids are the group of 3 smaller ones at the rear of the valve body, one is hiding underneath)

Un-clip loom, (be gentle - the plastic may be brittle) remove the 10mm bolt on strap and pull solenoid out of valve-body.

 

To check that it functions; hold terminal pin to body across a 12v battery and see if it clunks, if it does it's working. :)

 

If dead replace, if good, clean with aerosol brake cleaner & refit, remember to inspect o-ring and please use a torque wrench at 7ftlb.

 

Check all 10mm head bolts on valve-body are @ 7ftlb whilst you are in there. (They grow loose over time)

Tip: Pre-Facelift and Facelift N/A transmissions have a different internal loom, the solenoid connectors are not same.
