SupraTT2004
I think it has come to the conclusion that the valve stem seals need doing. but just wanted to hear that you lot agreed before I go and have this done as we all know its not a cheap job. Right, 1. Getting white smoke on startup when the engine is cold as soon as she is warm the smoke goes. 2. Getting a smell of fuel from the exhaust that is always there, no matter if the engine is warm or cold. and it smells the whole house down as my car is on the car. 3. Also losing some power, I have been told by some people the valve stem seals need doing and some people say it might not be. The car has done 59K, some people say should not have gone on that milege. Any comments, would be helpful. Thanks
tbourner
I thought stem seals was blue smoke? But then I'm an idiot so don't listen to me!!
SupraTT2004
dont think so thats turbo seals. blue smoke
tbourner
HGF I could understand, but why would there be coolant anywhere near your valve stems? AFAICR blue smoke is turbo seals and valve stems, depends on other factors to determine which. But like I say I am an idiot.
Digsy
Someome else posted the same question recently. White "smoke" on startup (actually steam) is nothing to worry about. Not sure what the oily smell might be. If there was oil in your exhaust fumes you would be putting out some blue smoke.

Aerotop Dave
Reading this article here... http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/valve_stem/index.html ...it looks like there are some fancy tools you need to complete this job. Now I'm not thinking of doing it myself but is this a job for any competent garage or do you really need a Supra specialist? How much should I expect to pay? I'm going to print the guide out and leave it with my preferred garage when they do the service + MOT this week to see what they think about doing it, but that guide looks well scary and I'm wondering if I should take it to someone who knows for definite what they are doing. VIL
Might be worth going through some of the comments in this previous thread, they may help: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=48764&page=2&pp=
Aerotop Dave
Not really, that's talking about price of turbo seal replacement, I'm looking at valve stem seals.
VIL
Dave, I was posting a suggestion for `SupraTT2004`. There are comments in the thread that may help him diagnose his particular problem.

Gazzawu
white smoke? is that not meant to be steam thats coming out? prob cos u got coolant in the engine shit worse case blown head gasket.
Digsy
...or maybe its just condensation in the exhaust from standing overnight, like every car does?
SupraTT2004
ok. say the steams/smoke is normall. how do you explain the strong smell of fuel. or is that normal? im BPU++ and got HKS 272 CAMS.
Digsy
The obcious answer would be you are running a bit rich. What is controlling yoru fuelling? Is your tailpipe black on the inside? Have you had an emissions test recently? Have you checked the output on your O2 sensor on the diagnostic port under the bonnet? If you put a multimeter across two of the pins (I forget which two) you can check the O2 sensor response.
SupraTT2004
I have a FSE, HKS F-CON V, and a Walbro fuel pump.
tbourner
Is it a strong smell of fuel or oil? Mine smells like what I would call strong fuel, but probably no worse than any other decatted TT - AFR looks ok on dyno plots.
Digsy
I could have sworn that the original post said "strong smell of oil". Maybe I misread it. Anyways, hopefully someone will be able to post up comments on fuelling with the above setup, and how to check the O2 sensor reading.
Ian C
Woohoo, stuff about your narrowband O2 sensor is in the tech FAQs It includes how to read it to see if it's reporting things wrong. White smoke on startup? That'll be condensation in the zorst, like every other car. I'm amazed you didn't point that out, Digsy. -Ian
SupraTT2004
Perhaps the smell is normall as well then as I have not really had the chance to smell someone else decatted supra etc. So sounds like i might be running a bit rich then. ok well see what I can do. thanks
TrickTT
much like the condensation, all cars smell of fuel on start up as the ecu runs rich for a few minutes - think of it like a choke on a carburettor (if you're old enough to remember such things (Damm i'm old)). Take it for a run to get it good and hot and see if the smell goes away, if it does, don't worry.
