White Smoke on startup.

I think it has come to the conclusion that the valve stem seals need doing. but just wanted to hear that you lot agreed before I go and have this done as we all know its not a cheap job.

Right,

1. Getting white smoke on startup when the engine is cold as soon as she is warm the smoke goes.

2. Getting a smell of fuel from the exhaust that is always there, no matter if the engine is warm or cold. and it smells the whole house down as my car is on the car.

3. Also losing some power,

I have been told by some people the valve stem seals need doing and some people say it might not be. The car has done 59K, some people say should not have gone on that milege.

Any comments, would be helpful. Thanks

Someome else posted the same question recently. White "smoke" on startup (actually steam) is nothing to worry about.

Not sure what the oily smell might be. If there was oil in your exhaust fumes you would be putting out some blue smoke.

Reading this article here...

...it looks like there are some fancy tools you need to complete this job. Now I'm not thinking of doing it myself but is this a job for any competent garage or do you really need a Supra specialist? How much should I expect to pay? I'm going to print the guide out and leave it with my preferred garage when they do the service + MOT this week to see what they think about doing it, but that guide looks well scary and I'm wondering if I should take it to someone who knows for definite what they are doing.

The obcious answer would be you are running a bit rich. What is controlling yoru fuelling? Is your tailpipe black on the inside? Have you had an emissions test recently? Have you checked the output on your O2 sensor on the diagnostic port under the bonnet? If you put a multimeter across two of the pins (I forget which two) you can check the O2 sensor response.

much like the condensation, all cars smell of fuel on start up as the ecu runs rich for a few minutes - think of it like a choke on a carburettor (if you're old enough to remember such things (Damm i'm old)). Take it for a run to get it good and hot and see if the smell goes away, if it does, don't worry.
