fastphil666
To manually convert my auto tt to manual, i know theres a load of options. I want the car to still drive as close to oem as possible. I will never be running insane power, currently bpu with 3.7 diff ratio. W58: there's debate on the power/torque levels these can hold. I used to own a 5 speed szr and never had any complaints about shift motion etc. Will it work with my diff ok, or will i be at high rpm on the motorway etc.. R154: apparently feel very "agrucultural" to shift, ive never used one. Can take bpu power effectively, with perhaps a little headroom? By and large they require similar parts to convert, so I suppose the biggest question is price for each box and rebuild parts availability? A part of me says v160 for oem, however 8-10k for an unproven 20year old gearbox??? Also t56 magnum, around the sane price but a new warrantied box. My man maths cant pay 8k for a manual gearbox when i could buy a very good manual car for that!! Thanks
AC93
I went from W58 to E46 M3 6spd and the W58 shifts nicer I think.. but I've had a BPU TT auto before and honestly... it's the best box I think, if I had to buy another Supra I'd be looking for a TT auto. However as my current Supra is already manual, if it goes pop i'll be getting a T56
m12aak
The W58 will work fine with your 3.769 auto diff ratio, in my NA car at 70mph in 5th is 3000rpm (stock 4.083 ratio), so you'd be around 2800rpm at 70 in 5th (based on stock tire diameters). Obviously you'll need to get the correct length driveshaft, but the size of the diff should be the same and so it should be a direct bolt on I think (i.e both small case diffs) Hope this helps. mc92
What does agricultural mean? I'm trying to decide too. Lots of non-toyota options are available as well but the incompatibility with the speedo puts me off.
Mike2JZ
New r154 box from toyota is the best oem replacement I've found. New boxes are smooth and it just works, no messing around with aftermarket bs parts
Noz
r154 can be a bit clunky. But any worn gearbox can be like that. I've heard reviews saying v160 can be too. So new is bound to be nice so don't go on bad reviews even from clunky owners. Comes down to what money you want to spend.

The speedo shouldn’t be a massive issue, the Grannas Racing swap uses a digital converter to get the T-56 to work with the stock speedo http://www.grannasracing.com/blogs/news/installing-a-dakota-digital-sgi-5e-on-your-t56-magnum-swap , so this should carry across with other gearboxes too. Agricultural, basically ive heard americans describe the r154 gear change similar to a truck/tractor. I cant see it myself. Mike, i wasnt aware toyota would still stock r154 boxes? Ive seen them new on ebay but not reputable sellers especially for 1800quid! I think r154 is the box id like, price dependant. Take it w58 boxes arent available new?
