raddys
Hi guys You may have seen my recent thread regarding getting rid of my supra for a bigger spec one? Well I think I've finally come to the conclusion to move on from supras, after owning a few for several years. My replacements I've whittled down to the 2 cars noted above, I know the r8 will probably be slower vs a mapped 911 t but at the end of the day I'm not drag racing every car I see and in my eyes a car being super fast doesnt make it a good car just on that alone, it's a combination of how the car makes you feel/spec/looks etc. Basically my question is to anyone here that may have owned either and has any insight to give on either car? Thanks, Grant
Annabella
911 GT3 best car I've ever driven, for handling and feeling what it's doing/going to do.

Chris Bailey
If you got the R8 V8, would you not feel gutted you didn’t get the V10 in the long run?
raddys
In a way yes, but its 35k for a v8 or 55k for a v10, of the same spec/miles Same thing with the 996 turbo, it's about 38k or 50k for a 997. Now obviously I'd much prefer a r8 v10 or 997 turbo but my budget isnt that high.

Scooter
911 turbo, is probably the more safe/sensible choice re residuals and perhaps servicing specialist knowledge etc go. Both have a model 'tax' I suspect worse than a Supra but not as bad (i'm guessing?) as a Maserati/Aston etc? I occasionally drift into looking at this area......I guess the R8 would provide more of a contrast than the Porsche? It's a tiny bit more supercar in look and internal layout than the slightly more saloon like 911? Less common, but also not as brisk. There is an argument that it might be one of the last of the manual mid engined V8's. Loads of NSX's (even auto's) that are more expensive, so it could be at the bottom of the depreciation curve? raddys
Some good points scooter I have reasons I want both but I cant make my mind up, test driving both this week though so hopefully il get abit more clarity on it Cheere
214supra
996/911 Turbo is build on the cheap. Paid a specialist to inspect the car for you is the safest bet.
raddys
Care to elaborate? I was under the impression that a 996 turbo was a very well built car?
hamzahkhan
Do share the outcomes! R8 v10 manual spyder is the one you want
Swampy442
Either of those but in auto form, probably the Porsche. But the Audi would probably be the more reliable, less dramatic option.
Scooter
Whenever I see/think this, it just seems like every option has far more ownership risk than the much older Supra, I'm trying to work out if it's pure fear on my part combined with a tinge of over optimism re the Supra costs going forward. The risk reward balance seems too high for me, I'd like to experience the R8 in particular but to own one for a sustained period I'm not so sure........I realise I'm so tight and risk adverse lol!! But I would say I'm a sucker for the rear view into the engine a R8 has it got me looking at it more than any 911's I've seen which is IMO less of a novelty to look at. I know what you mean, supras are very reliable, however I think if you get a well built/well maintained car then it will serve you well. So many people get put off cars that have "bad reliability" because they read something on the internet. The thing is if something goes wrong then people are quick to complain on forums or ask for answers online, whereas if your car is running perfectly you wouldnt often see someone say "oh my cars running so good just as always" So i often think some cars get far to much of a rep as being unreliable. Yer I know what you mean, I've had supras for so long and always talked myself out of changing it for something else thinking that one day they will rocket in value but the same could he said for any collectable car I suppose. Yes the r8 is a looker, I know exactly what you mean For me I love the looks, the v8 soundtrack and the gated manual on the r8, it just looks so amazing. the porsche I like because its pedigree, it looks wide from the rear and obviously goes like shit when remapped. Decisions decisions lol
Mike2JZ
Have you ever been in a big single 800hp+ supra? If you haven't then I recommend you do. Most people only have one answer, "when can i have it"

I agree, my new BMW N62 engine has a raft or problems but really when you look some of them are annoying but not 'that' bad and it's part of the reason (other is marmite looks) they are cheap. Sub £7K like this I'll take the punt, £30K makes me personally wince, but like I say I'm tight...and so the stress level would go up owning something better but of higher value (I accept I may be missing out!). But hey you could probably do the Porsche, then the R8, then back to a Supra in 6 years for less than the depreciation on a brand new mundane BMW/Merc. Perhaps that's the way to go, gamble on the one you think will hold value better (Porsche Turbo?) and then down the line you can go R8 (maybe even V10) as the prices perhaps continue to drop? Definitely sounds like you have an itch you need to scratch!
Noz
I've raced GT3 before. For its power I was impressed but all that cash doesnt do much when it cant keep up with an old Supra. Even a little NAt like mine. Best road race I've ever had. Love the 911. And anyone who says they can't corner. I refer them to Bignum and his ring video. A porsche is nice. Just depends on your flavour.

raddys
Have you ever been in a big single 800hp+ supra? If you haven't then I recommend you do. Most people only have one answer, "when can i have it" I haven't, 650hp is the biggest I've ridden in, it's the lag that gets me tbh, yes sure it hits hard once its spooled and will destroy 90% of motors on the road but I feel like getting something abit more "sporty" The supra is a gt and I feel at times abit heavy, having the Gz I believe they weigh 1700kg with all the extras on them so I'd like something abit more nimble I guess. Watching 800hp supra on youtube doesnt fill me with confidence tbh, foot goes down, then its nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, then all the boost coming online at 4.5/5k rpm, meanwhile that car that's a 1/3rd of your power has already gone whilst your spooling. This is exactly why I was hesitant to big turbo mine, my bpu was faster to 70/80 from a standstill then a 650hp supra because of his lag

Boyne
Just my two pence worth, if you could stretch to a 997 turbo was a far far better car, also the v10 is the r8 to have with a manual, but lately again your budget I really would like v12 aston martin ? But at the price you talk I'd be looking for best latetest nissan gtr r35.
sidewaysdan
There’s a r8 v8 supercharged one up for sale on a well known website now. Looks very nice within you budget
raddys
Just my two pence worth, if you could stretch to a 997 turbo was a far far better car, also the v10 is the r8 to have with a manual, but lately again your budget I really would like v12 aston martin ? But at the price you talk I'd be looking for best latetest nissan gtr r35. Yer but like I said they are both an extra 17k-20k extra I'd love a v10 r8 or 997 T but I dont want to spend that much considering the minimal amount I drive my toys. the extra 2 cylinders and 100hp is not worth a 20k premium I my eyes but each to their own. Yes i had looked however v12 astons are abit to subdued for me, much more of an older gents car imo. I did a track day not to long ago, i drove 5 cars, I wanted to get a feel on the track of each model for a potential purchase. Little summary below: R8 v8 - by far I thought this felt the most special, it wasnt the faster by far but it just felt and looked amazing, v8 soundtrack is beautiful and build quality was sublime, plus on a track (if it's a short windy one) the r8 v8 is marginally quicker then a 911 996 turbo) R35 GTR - I had big Hope's, but honestly it was pretty boring imo, it's so easy to drive fast that I just didnt find it involving enough hence it just lacked the fun factor for me, dont get me wrong they are stupidly quick but it just didnt feel special, it didnt sound special and it certainly doesnt look that good tbh, it is however an amazing tool for track times Lamborghini gallardo performante - honestly, not what I expected. I've always had a thing for a lambo, until I drove one. I was excited, I got in, the driving position was uncomfortable to say the least, torso facing 1 way, legs the other way, then there was the gearbox, I know exotics are not supposed to be easy drives and demand more input but honestly I dont know if the gear box was fu#ked or if it's how they all drive, the gear change was so violent that when I was entering corners fast if I were to change gear on a sweeping bend at speed it would jerk so hard and unsettle the car, not what you want when in a corner at 100mph+ (I didnt have this issue in any other car) Ariel atom 300 supercharged - mental, just bloody mental, go kart on steroids, I'd love one but I like driving to europe/nurburgring each year and it's just not practical 997 Carrera S (I think) - by the time.id driven the others I wasnt interested in this, bit slow, bit dull inside, sounded naff and felt abit swingy, wasnt my cup of tea at all Edited June 30, 2020 by raddys (see edit history)
