Valve springs: small space up, down, doesn't matter?

We are noting the orientation of the valve springs when replacing the seals on a '97 supra, and they have been randomly small space up or down at about half way through the job. This is the first time the camshafts have been removed since manufacture. The shop manual clearly states the small space should be down, but this is not the way it was assembled at the factory. My inclination is to leave everything the same as it started, but I was looking for other inputs if there is a manufacturing error I should correct for upon reassembly. Any concrete ideas?

OE springs have a paint mark on them. These marks need to be at the top when installing the springs.

I haven't seen any paint marks on these springs. where on the springs do you think the paint marks should be? The Toyota shop manual said nothing about paint marks.

Not sure what shop manual you are looking at. It says it pretty clearly in the engine repair manual though.

I'm looking at the factory shop manual for the 1997 Supra. It looks similar to yours, but without the paint mark. But with either manual, the small space in the spring is shown to be at the bottom. So I need to decide whether to leave as originally assembled, or change to the manual. Changing to the specification in the manual would be assuming it was assembled incorrectly in Japan. It would be nice to know the concept behind putting the small space at the bottom. Perhaps more isolation between the camshaft and the cylinder when the spring is compressed/ valve open? It sure would be nice to get through to a Toyota engineer on this one.

Just for the record, I attempted to attach an image of the '97 manual
