NA ITB Build - I've gone rogue

Can't measure valve shims and can't use a tape measure.

 

Maybe it would be a good idea to give the job to a "Mechanic" who understands how to measure things?

 

Everyone has to start somewhere and sometimes these challenges make a project more interesting.

 

Besides that as far as I understand these were parts that he already bought from somewhere, not machined or built for this specific build.

Correct, the part was specifically made for a Supra 2JZGE so would have thought they'd have made it to fit...

Can you not reduce the length of the intake runners? it would be a shame to start chopping things up, but reducing their length alongside cutting down the trumpets would give more clearance.

 

That's what we're thinking, but as you said it seems a shame to start cutting things up, especially as it should have been made to fit. I've emailed EFI with pics so hoping to hear back from them.

 

Interestingly, when they first started making the systems for Supras in 2014, the manifold was angled upwards so would have helped us with clearance, no idea why mine is different

It's not that he couldn't measure valve shims, it was more that he preferred to send it off to a specialist who already had shims and valve seals ready to go and had more time to spend individually on that part. He's still got to make a living

Just to keep people updated, the company have got back to me and have offered for me to swap the throttle bodies (and trumpets) for a smaller versions they have (they would cover shipping costs to AUS). I'm a bit worried this would affect the performance, plus I paid for the larger throttle bodies so think they should really be adapting the manifold/trumpets before changing the bodies themselves, will let you guys know what comes of it!

 

In the meantime, my mechanic has found a local company that have offered to shorten the manifold itself for £70 an hour labour (around 2-3 hrs), so I'm tempted offer that idea up to the ITB company as an alternative and charge it back to them. The cost of posting bits back to them in Australia and getting bits shipped back could possibly exceed that anyway, especially if they then have to adapt the manifold their end.

Hi Herb, thanks for checking in!

It's been a bit of a nightmare journey to be honest, the full kit had to go back to Australia and be changed for a smaller kit to fit in the engine bay. Massively annoying as everything takes so much longer to get sorted at the moment and Melbourne has been in and out of lockdown. Thankfully the company paid for the delivery both ways and I also got a refund for the difference as the new kit is a cheaper system. Bit of a shame as I now have 45mm throttle bodies rather than tapered 48mm but not the end of the world.

My mechanic is setting to it on the 30th Nov so I'll update with any more info once I get it, hopefully not long until we hear it running!

Sorry to hear that it caused you so much headache with sending it back to Australia and so on.

Ok so small updates, Liam (mechanic) has has to skim the oil filter housing to make things fit but the kit is now on and mounted. I've had to order a new longer throttle cable, and the throttle position sensor is wired in. Loom is to be tidied up. 

Problem we've run into is that there are no take offs built into the manifold, plus as we have larger cams in there I've had to order an electric vacuum kit as we'll have no vacuum from the inlet for the brake servo. Gone for a Hella UP32 kit which apparently is pretty good and what a lot of the hot rodders tend to go for. Hopefully it works!

There is a company in the UK called „Reverie“. They offer custom plenums for ITBs made of carbon fibre.

Also how are you going to get this mapped? Are you going to use equal length vacuum lines to a vacuum block and measure MAP there? Or are you going to map it with n-alpha?

I'm just going to use filter socks on the end of the trumpets, really want to let them sing as much as possible! 

I have someone lined up to map it and to be quite honest I have no idea what his process will be as there's no take offs for a MAP sensor in the manifold. He seems confident he can do it though so I guess I'll see

I went up to go see the car earlier last week and theres not a huge amount to update on unfortunately, Christmas rush for customers cars has put mine on a little bit of a back burner but Liam has fabricated a throttle cable bracket and we've put the cable through to the pedal. Will hopefully have some more progress 2nd week of Jan!
