I went to register my car but Victorian roads wont do it since my vin number is on a plate, it needs to be engraved onto the chasis. Is anyone in Australia, Victoria able to do this ??

Hi the vin should also be stamped on the firewall in the engine bay above/below the lines that run from the brake booster to the intake manifold, hopefully that’s what you need to get it registered. I’ve unfortunately not got a photo which shows it but it’s definitely on the firewall!

So the inter web says that all cars in Australia, manufactured after 1st January 1989, require a 17 character VIN. Thus the Japanese chassis number won't be accepted for their registration process.

Looks like you need to contact the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development who will provide you with the additional characters for your VIN which will be uploaded to thier NEVDIS database.

At that point you can then seek to have the chassis number amended. I'm sure the above Department can advise on places where this can be done officially.

All info in below link.

Ive got a full vin for australia, the car was registered in Queensland, owned it for 9 years. I wonder if i get the plate welded to the chasis so its one with the car..the lady said the plate itself isn't allowed cause a screw driver can be used to remove the plate from underneath. Thoughts on welding the plate ?
