tayr
Hi Guys, Took the car out of the garage after being stored for a long while. Noticed some reddish fluid on the floor under the gearbox. Only about the size of a 1p coin. Anything obvious to check as i haven't really had the chance to get underneath it? There is no physical drip on the box itself that i could see from afar so it appears to be a very slow leak of some sorts. The car will be going to SRD soon so just want to advise what to check TIA Edited May 19, 2020 by tayr (see edit history)
David P
Anything obvious to check? Use your eyes and follow the drip to it's source!

Ark
The oil seal can weep on the gearbox. As long as it's not pissing out it'll probably be OK for a while. I understand it's a gearbox-off job to change it though, so maybe wait until the clutch needs doing too. Or give Stuart Sandy a call and he can check it properly and tell you what's what (he's local to you). Also, are you sure it's oil rather than coolant? Might the heater matrix pipes leak and drip down to that area of the car? Edited May 19, 2020 by Ark (see edit history)
Swampy442
If theres a drip there will be a track to the source. But dont forget the power steering fluid is also red. Well, should be!
tayr
Thanks guys, noted - will have to get the car up on the jacks at the weekend then and have a look at the different areas it could be coming from as it wasn't clear from popping my head under. Good shout to check the heater matrix pipes. Problem with a small drip (1 penny size over about 5/6 months) is that it's hard to actually see where it's coming from as it's so gradual, but i'll check anything for a bit of moisture
Swampy442
If thats the leak rate I wouldn't be worrying about it
Scooter
Compare the fluid to the fluid in the coolant expansion tank, to verify if it's the gearbox oil? If it's the gearbox oil there are a couple of seals that can go (selector seal on top rear prop joint?), I would take a look (stick your phone on video and shove it under there on a plank of wood or something!? inazone
Could be the breather, mine has a small leak, I suspect it's the sump pan seal or what ever it is called. One day I will sort it out, but at the moment I'm not bothered with a little drip.... Lol. I do keep an eye on the levels so not worried. Noz
If thats the leak rate I wouldn't be worrying about it I dont own a v160. But I'll go against the grain here and bet that Toyota didnt design it to leak.

m4dsup
more than likely the shifter seal, as its most common to leak. I just sorted mine last week. Nothing to worry about but a fairly simple fix. I'm sure SRD can sort it when you visit.
Andy Ven
As the guys above have said, could be power steering fluid or gearbox fluid. If it is gearbox fluid then chances are its the seals. If they are the original seals then they have probably become hard / worn over the last 20 odd years. I have a full set of OEM seals for the v160/161 for sale if you find out it is those leaking. Noz
They do leak and btw toyota didnt design it... Whoever designed it. Just because it does, surely that isnt part of its specification. Not saying it's a problem. Just saying I dont think anything like that leaking, is part of its design

Swampy442
It doesn't make it right, but its not detrimental. Hours/pounds invested vs going 'oh its dripped once in 6 months' I know what I'd do
