Hi guys,

I am looking into a Toyota Supra. I have the Engine No and VIN/Chassis No. I would like to know if this is the code for a factory VVTi twin turbo 6 speed manual?

Engine No: EJ2A800******

VIN/Chassis No: J2A80*******

Thanks in advance

https://www.importavehicle.info/2017/09/toyota-supra-buyers-guide-jdm-vs-usdm.html

There’s a table on this web page, which gives you the build numbers by year.

VVT-I was introduced as per the table, so your build number will need to be equal to or after that displayed for vvt-i.

Late models lost the E designation, and gained GF at the start designating frame number.

This is displayed right at the start of the numbering system.

Obviously, as mentioned you would want to see an ‘F’ for a 6 speed in the number.

Another set of code detail for drive train can be seen here.

http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/mkiv-supra/14011-vin-number.html

Ultimately, 6 speed will be v160 (non vvt-i) or v161 (vvt-i).

Hope that helps ;)

those dont really say anything.

If the vin says 2jzgte and the gearbox says v161/v160 on the vin then yes.

Sorry I don't follow? the VIN I have provided above does not say 2jzgte it says J2A80******* So does this indicate it is not a genuine TT?

If you want to be sure go to carvx.jp or type the JZA80-xxxxxx in there and it wil give you a full report. Costs about £20 also shows you auction histories etc

Also, it will be JZA not J2A.. J2A means nothing

I just did that and paid for the check thanks for the headsup it was about £26 odd and im waiting for them to provide the report, says they take upto a day to process.

It came up as an RZ-S 2jzgte so guess it is a genuine manual tt.

I noticed the J2A is actually JZA when it was registered im guessing the person who did the paperwork read the Z as a 2 :banghead:

Nice one, yep going by that it’s a genuine TT, i always use carvx, some people get a lot of info, others get a little, but it’s worth it anyway.

If it says F6 for transmission then it’s a 6 speed manual

Unfortunately carvx cant help they said as the car was exported way before 2004 they wont hold any information. I have been told the same from another company called japanese odometer check. I think the car was exported from Japan to the UK when it was only 2-3 years old.

Ah that’s a shame. Your next option is to ask the seller to take a picture of the metal vin plate on the car. You can PM me the picture of you wish and I can tell you the spec

Same experience with Carvx here. Initially they told me they had the information for my car, so I bought a report and it had literally nothing it other than the VIN.

They were very good about it when I complained, gave me a refund very quickly, but they had to admit plenty of cars wont have any info based on when or where they were exported.

Ah thats a shame, i've had 4 reports with them. 3 of them have been really good, showing me previous auction photos etc. One actually stopped me from buying a complete wrecker over here which seller classed as immaculate and accident free. I received about 20 photos of the car smashed to pieces in japan

If this the car I think it is, which the seller asked our opinion before putting it in the market, it will require a very good inspection. It is still without a mot and from the mot history it has considerable rust.

This might help, the old http://mkiv.supras.org.nz/specs.htm talks about VVTI introduction by frame

Japanese Mkiv Production Changes

Date - Frame No. - Description

Sept 1997 - 1000849 - VVTi engine (now BEAMS previously LASRE), hot wire type air flow meter, REAS (Relative Absorber System) shock absorber system introduced, V160 changed to V161, adopted collision safe body GOA, adopted flex lockup equipped 4th gear automatic ECT-iE. Tiptronic steering wheel option available for automatics

Thanks - I have now confirmed it is a genuine VVTi F6 TT. Thanks

It is the same car. Last time it showed anything about rust on an MOT was in 2010 the MOT history after that doesnt mention any rust so I guess there is no rust?

I wouldn't trust that to be the case unless there is proof of work carried out to sort it as there are too many friendly mot testers.

I would carry a very thorough inspection

Any links to the actual car?
It is on auto trader.
Was it the one with filler lifting?
Hmmm I don't think so. It is the one with aftermarket front bumper, steering wheel, an amplifier and two basses on the boot. It need a respray at the very minimum which people here told the guy.
