DickWayne
Hey everybody, new to the forum, Im looking for a few answers maybe you guys can help with. I have a fairly unmolested 94 Mk4 2JZ-GTE w/43,000 miles, and I wanted to do some fairly minor upgrades. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for manual boost controllers. Im fairly new this subject so really anything will help me out. Also Im looking to put a "tune" on the Supra, but Ive heard that because of the software, the only option is to do a complete re-map of the ECU. I was looking to get somewhere in the 450-500 RWHP range, and I was wondering if this was realistic on a stock setup, with a manual boost controller, intercooler, exhaust, and an ECU re-map. If im way off base, please let me know. if I am off base, and you have any suggestions on how to reach my goal could you please let me know, that would be great. thank you all for your time and I hope you have a great day
Mike2JZ
No such thing as an ECU remap using the stock ECU. The stock ECU is almost prehistoric by modern standards, and bar a few ancient tuners (Mines, Toms, etc) in Japan who can/did modify the ECU's ROM files back in the day, there is no one offering such a service anymore. On a stock ECU if you are looking to max out your factory turbo setup, then you can do "Basic Performance Mods" [bPU]. This revolves around fitting exhaust decats, boost controller, larger intercooler, a fuel cut defender and raising the factory boost from ~ 0.7 bar to a safe maximum of 1.2 bar. This will get you to around 350-400whp range. Manual boost controller can work fine but lacks any sort of safety features, so if you don't know what you are doing, you could start damaging the engine/turbo system without knowing. Most electronics boost controllers will have a safety alarm and can turn off if overboost is detected and is being caused by the controllers settings. If you want 450-500 rwhp. Then you either go with larger hybrid turbo's or a single turbo conversion. Both will require a standalone ECU, uprated fuel system and many other supporting mods to support said powerlevels safely and reliably. Noz
As Mike says. Manual boost controllers are dangerous. With with an electronic one. Manual controllers are false economy when it comes to saying on tuning costs.
Scooter
Fuel pump upgrade is important too...
Scooter
The forum search is a bit broken but this old old thread gives the basics. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?53915-BPU-and-INFO&highlight=Walbro If yours is stock there is a built in fuel cut protection at 1 bar, which will stop you running lean melting stuff and generally ruining the engine. Part of standard upgrades is it fit a Fuel cut defender which fools the Ecu and bypasses the limit, once one of these is fitted that safety net has gone. So then you need the fuel pump to avoid running lean, different plugs to keep a good spark and avoid 'det'. Removing the standard exhaust and cats can make things so free flowing that the turbo's can over boost, some would only remove the first cat (nearest the engine one) and leave the second one in and depending on the exhaust you'd get 1/1.2 bar, it varies car to car exhaust to exhaust. If you are DIY'ing you could fit stuff and just leave the FCD til last for safety.
Swampy442
500whp is 600+ actual hp, thats firmly on single turbo territory

I can attest to this, I had a Mines ECU. While in Japan, I sent the ECU to Mines to repair a 02 Sensor error, even they couldn't fix it.
