swiftstu
Hi all, Searching the forum I can see and have read a bunch of older questions / posts about auto to manual conversions- in fact too many to sift through entirely. So I would like a manual conversion for my ‘95 SZ. I have seen a few gearboxes referred to by numbers and some teething problems from some. Could someone give a simpleton some advice about; A) what options there are? B) any recommendations in the Cambridgeshire ish area as to who could complete the job for me C) any idea on current prices I’d really appreciate the help as a lot of the discussions go a bit above my head. For perspective I changed my first discs and pads 1 month before my 40th birthday this year... and that is my mechanical limit. Thanks Stuart
Noz
From what I know. I'd go cd009. 350z gearbox. Its 6 speed and seems more reliable than the w58. That would be my choice. You'll need pedals. Clutch and slave cylinder. Gearbox itself wont be much different in price either. Worth the extra spend.
Swampy442
Stay auto and save 000's. First you need to work out your budget as that will determine what box/swap you can afford, it aint cheap any more
Frank Bullitt
Stay auto, build the box for more power and be quicker than the manuals

Thanks Stuart Hi Stuart, I did this conversion myself, honestly, with some patience, theres no reason you couldn’t do it yourself. There’s a comprehensive step by step guide on how to do it on here. I went from Auto-W58(original 5 speed NA box)-R154 (Toyota Chaser Turbo 5 speed box). If you’re going to remain NA, go W58. It’s a lovely box to drive with, the ratios are good and at NA power they’re reliable and cheap, with plenty of clutches available. If you intend to go for more power, I’d go for the R154. mr.gill
Nissan cd009, BMW/getrag 420g, T56 magnum, the V160, R154 and/or sequential transmissions. There's a plethora of choices of transmission these days. Just depends on your budget, power level and all that.
squiffy
If you are staying non turbo, I'd just get the w58. It's what comes in the manual SZ anyway. I brought one with all the bits for a conversion with a lsd for a soarer I converted a few years back for £1000 but I'm guessing they've gone up a bit since! swiftstu
Thanks all, that’s great info! What is the best way to get hold of a w58 box and all the trimmings? Any recommendations please as that’s all I’ll need- staying NA and not doing anything with the power. I won’t do it myself as I just don’t have the knowledge, tools, and a ferocious back injury- any recommendations on places to do the work? squiffy
Keron on here might be able to supply you with a full kit of parts? Other then that I'd probably keep an eye on the sales forum on here as most of the time you don't know a gearbox has problems unti it's fitted, so you'd hopefully have a little piece of mind by buying it from a memeber instead of an ebay randomer

AC93
After lockdown I'll have a full W58 set up available, came from my n/a car, I've replaced it with a 6 speed as going turbo. After the car is mapped and I no longer need the box it'll be up for sale

But please let me know when we’re allowed into civilisation again. Thanks
Uzair
Hi! Hope you're all well and safe! I'd like to register my interest too please. Can I have dibs on the W58 if Stuart decides he isn't going ahead with it? Please please please!
Chasz86
I have a friend putting in a cd009, speedo is this issue now as speed sensor was on the auto. what is the solution for this?
P_Bazz
The easiest swaps for the NA are as mentioned above the W58 and the R154. Both are able to utilize the stock diff ratio as well. The 6 speed options require a diff change as well except the T56/Magnum gearboxes as they have much longer gear ratios. Easy to buy new from Grannas Racing with all the right parts but somewhat more expensive. The CD009 is very strong but also very large and requires extensive modification to the trans tunnel, shifter, driveshaft, mounting and as below a solution for the speed sensor as the Z cars have them on the diff. The BMW gearboxes are easy to source but not all have a suitable ratio for the available Supra final gearing options. They are also a lot smaller than the CD009/JK40 gearboxes but require some modifications to the driveshaft, shifter and mounting point as well. I have a friend putting in a cd009, speedo is this issue now as speed sensor was on the auto. what is the solution for this? Convert the signal from one of the ABS sensors to a speed output signal with a Dakota Digital converter, if you don't have ABS you need to fit either a hub with an ABS sensor or a GPS speedo unit.
