Chrism001
Hi everyone. I have this problem going on now for about a year now, when I start going 60mph+ the front end of the car feels very 'loose'. It feels like the front goes very light and unstable. i also get bad steering wheel wobble as well. I've already had the brakes refurbished, new discs all round, new tyres all round, the wheels balanced 3 times(by 3 different places), had it 4 wheel aligned, made sure hubs and back of wheels are spotlessly clean and also checked/ tightened the subframe bolts but I still have this problem. I've had a look at the suspension arms, ball joints, coilovers and all seem in fairly good condition so I'm stumped. Any one had similar experiences and can shed some light? Any help would be appreciated
David P
Maybe the subframe bolts are seized and didn't tighten up? Try loosening them and re-torquing, one at a time. Edited April 20, 2020 by David P (see edit history)
Dnk
I guess it wasn't doing this when you first bought the car ?
David P
Also check for any slack in wheel bearings. Or the pin-ends on steering rack. Or steering rack rubber bush mounts. Dnk
Were the rear lower arms changed as they had play in the ball joints on the 2018 mot and no mention on the 2019 mot If it were me i'd take it to my mates garage and pay for an hour to go over the car on the ramp
Chrism001
I guess it wasn't doing this when you first bought the car ? No had the car 4/5 years now, only recently got this problem And yes the rears were the ones with play in them and they've been changed

mellonman
Could it be the power sterling speed resistance thingy
Chrism001
Oh sorry didn't see the others, haven't checked the rack. Need to get the car back in the air to have a good look. Are the mounts easy enough to get to?

rider
Are the tyres on the correct wheels? Getting the one direction the wrong direction can do strange things.
Chrism001
Tired front shocks Did think this, but shocks look good with no visable leaks. And surely I'd get problems at lower speeds as well not just higher up?
Chrism001
Are the tyres on the correct wheels? Getting the one direction the wrong direction can do strange things. Yep, double checked this as well. I've made that mistake before. Got me pulling my hair out, I'll get the car up and check the steering rack, this is the only option I haven't checked. Thanks for the help
Swampy442
They dont have to look bad to be bad, but tired shocks will have a marked effect on your handling
Chrism001
They dont have to look bad to be bad, but tired shocks will have a marked effect on your handling Any way I can check without just replacing? Could be an expensive guess if its not the problem
Chrism001
Update Had the car up in the air, steering rack seems fine as do the bushes attaching it to the sub frame. Upper wishbone ball joints looks like the only bit of wear and tear I could find, could this possibly cause the loose feeling front end? Swampy442
Only by driving really, if the car is pitching a lot, bumps upset it mid corner, you feel like the tyres are 'juddering', when you push down on the front and it bounces more than once, many ways. Chrism001
You could be right come to think of it, the front does feel like it 'hops' slightly going down the road, at any speed as well I'll go with new shocks first, Cheers for the help
fastcar
What suspension system are you running? Have you checked the suspension bushes, ball joints and track rod end using a pry bar to see if there is movement? Need to do the same with the rear end aswell even though it feels as it might be coming from the front end! If all is tight with minimal play then most likely be the shocks! I'm running meister r coilovers. I've had a look at bushes and haven't found nothing major, no play in any of them. I've got new shocks coming so I'll try that first, then get it geometry redone and see if it's helped
