ROAD COURSE - Which TURBO!?!? Goal 650whp

RZtwin

Recommended Posts

Can you guys educate me on what turbo I should be looking at getting? Car is a 94 Supra 6spd RZ. I use it for lapping days and would like to do more time attack events. TT just isn't cutting it anymore. Looking for a reliable 650whp on pump/e85.

Just rebuilt the head, BC 272 cams, stiffer springs, retainers, seals, ECU soon to be Haltech Elite 2500. Want to use a cast exhaust manifold. Stock bottom end.

Not sure what A/R, Brand, or Turbo I should be looking at? Will be between 4500rpm and 6800rpm most of the time during a stint. Don't want to bend any rods so can't be too quick spooling hard. Give me your honest opinions.

Is this full Budget? It also changes how it acts with a different manifold, so is this included wjth your £1800? Im guess ur wanting brand new aswell?

So my 3 choices would be-

1 -borg warner 8374 efr. Dbb turbo. Only downside is it uses an in built wastegate as is known for boost creep. But is a great street turbo.

Cost £2000 (slightly above your budget)

2 - borg warner s364/s366. Good turbos, cheap and use an external wastegate. £900 there or there abouts. Not dbb so spool is slightly affected.

3 - precision 6466. Probably the best turbo for your application. Can have a divided housing for better spool. Again, slightly above your price £2000 retail.

I would go for either the precision or the borg warner. The borg warner s366 with a divided intake with a cast log manifold will be the cheapest and best bang for your buck.

Running a Precision 6466DBB GEN2 1.00A/R making 853bhp/641lbft (flywheel) on pump fuel. Had the turbo around 5 years and had zero issues between 660bhp to the current 850bhp.

Shit!! That's awesome! Race fuel?

Also what would the difference between. 81a/r and 1.00a/r ?

The difference would be quicker spool with the smaller ar but it would choke the engine up on the top end. But suited better to road use imo

No UK pump fuel. The 1.00A/R is a happy medium, makes full boost circa 4000rpm and pulls hard all the way to the Rev limit (7500rpm) and on our setup it holds 641lbft from 4500rpm to 7500rpm.

Can a log manifold even do 650whp.

Never seen it.

I see they do a tubular log hybrid style. Interesting. Not seen that before.

What have you been looking at in 10 years of membership? :D

You want something quick spooling for a road course, Garrett is much better than Precision for the low to mid-range kick. Precision is great for top end and top speed runs. 272 cams are too big for 650hp and your engine will now be interference with these fitted.

FSR is good manifold although I don't understand the reason for the unequal length runners. There is also the PHR cast manifold although I don't know maximum figures people have pushed on this.

Something along the lines of a GTX3582R or the G25-660 is where I would be looking.

Hey Frank, thanks for the info. I want mid to top end power:) FSR/SPA after reading many posts seems to flow quicker and more volume compared to other brands. Good price too!

My car made 681 whp with a sound performance torque monster kit. Ported cast manifold. Precision 6766. All through a built auto with a histall converter. To get over 550 whp with a cast manifold will 100 percent require ethanol.

What do I require changing in my stock fuel system to use ethanol? Besides the obvious, injectors, pump?
