Think I’m going to out my cd009 and go for a t56 magnum as it’s much more suited to my driving and the power I’m going to be aiming for, has anyone got a t56 magnum in there supra that could PM me as I have a few questions

Cheers

Yeah now it’s become more of a “in thing” the premium put on the price for the swap kits will be down I need to see what’s around for a swap kit since I’m already manual I won’t have to worry about the pedal, interior panel and master cylinder so

Just email Joel at Grannas. Hes really quick to respond and really helpful. He said hes sent quite a few kits to the UK. Unless its reviews you want of course.

No no thats perfect i emailed him already mainly asking about the price of a kit sent to me and which parts i'd need with what i already have.

Thanks for your input though mate :)

So pricing everything up it’s going to be 6500£ shipped (without VAT or import duty) which is a hefty sum of money.... on a completely irrelevant note... totally not related to this post what so ever.....

If one was to put a gearbox conversion kit in a container from America and shipped it to here and picked it up myself would that be a way of missing VAT?

Maybe would work. A type of smuggling though lol sure the fine would be worst than tax.

And its hefty if you compare it to an R154 or w58.

Compare it to a 25 year old v160 which dowsnt come with a clutch. It's a good price. Add import tax. Basically you're buying a v160 and clutch/flywheel. But its brand new.

Just be careful you dont end up spending in the long run.

Perhaps aim for a lower power rating with harder driving. Not needing the engine build. But needing the transmission.

My advice is dont go for power over hard driving. It kills me having an R154 and not being able to drag race my 600hp with fear of breaking it.

For 6 and a half grand you could get a V16x with some change I think, and all the ease of plug and play fitment

Not that easy though is it.

Let's say you can get a used V160/1 for 4k-5k. Assume its in good working condition and has no synchros or bearings that need fixing. Otherwise factor in another 1-2k on repairs, depending on amount of components that need changing.

So now you have a V160, but if you are shooting for big power then you still need a big clutch & flywheel to support the power. Another 1.5-3k depending on clutch/flywheel choice.

Now you have your V160 in the car, but gear ratio's are all screwed up unless you are starting with a 3.26 diff. So now you have to get a propshaft that can handle big power and the right ratio diff. Can spend anywhere between 1.5 - 3k here again depending if you go with big case / small case, uprated propshaft etc.

So before you know it you are back in the region of 7 to 11 grand just for a driveline setup.

I'm not hating on the V160 by any means as they are a proven setup, but if you take the above as an example and give yourself a rough budget of 10k to get your driveline sorted for handling north of a 1000hp. Then you can basically swing either way in terms of T56 or V160.

T56 at least comes with a years warranty, and should something break its easy to get replacements.

Have you tried rebuilding a V160 recently? I have, not cheap or easy to find all the parts. Not impossible obviously, but bit of a ballache.

If a car was TT6 to begin with then obviously you'd be mad to change the V160 for a T56 if everything was still working correctly. But if you are coming from an NA or TT auto that has none of the TT6 driveline to begin with, then my opinion would be to go with T56 if I had 10k to blow on a driveline.

For me it's as simple as comparison the ratio of old vs new.

20 years+ 5k vs Brand new 6.5k (with clutch rated 700 ft lb).

If we were talking a whole car it would be a no brainer. Or anything.

A gearbox isnt that valuable it doesnt barely depreciate.

I'm with you though Mike. It only makes sense if upgrading not replacing. Due to the weird market. But to be fair. I think theres still a chance a swap wouldnt lose its value but maintain it.

It just wouldn't add any value of course.

I think if it's totally OEM with a T56. I'd agree.

But if its modified. I think the T56 stands the same ground as a v160 upgrade. As would both be a little less than a true six speed.

We all know it will eventually happen where a six speed supra is sold and the gearbox isnt even listed as being non standard.

I've known buyers buy a TT6 single turbo and it ended up being a NAt with cam cover changed and a trans upgrade. Remember seeing Whifbitz having to remove the dizzy.

this may of been an option but I already have most of what I need and I’m low compression from cracked rings and my valves are leaking so it needs a rebuild and for the price of standard parts to forged parts I may aswell build build so

It may not add value, but any seller would still stick it up for 25k and not the 15 its actually worth

To be honest though if you think about it, if you boost up to say 1000hp the car literally isn’t worth selling in the UK you’d realistically want to sending it to the US (which is exactly what I’d do if it came to selling) and the US boys hate the v160s compared to the t56s especially with the new magnum-f Joel grannas offers the shifter on it pretty much sits exactly where it’s meant to with a tiny 1inch arm added on and I’d say from looks it shifts better than a v160

With saying all this I’m against the v160 purely from experience of TRYING to buy a supra (bare in mind I’ve only owned 1 supra)

I went to view 5-6 supras before I bought my one from George and 3 of which were v160s 2 of those v160s were f*cked crunching gears, and synchros obliterated as I tried to drive off.

I’m a big gamer on PC so I talk to ALOT of Americans on discord with my supra being my profile picture they all ask if it’s mine, how much I payed, what I’ve done to it etc and they go into it saying you cannot find them for less than $80k

So if you was to say it costs around $20k to do the transport process landed and registered in the US your now left with $60k and converted that’s £45k not sure how the tax’s will work our but even if you have to pay VAT that’s £45k - £9K = £36k for a twin turbo 6 speed?

But this is all based off of gamers that play video games in there spare time that just enjoy cars and YouTube videos so take it with a pinch of salt
