Vin Plate -- reprint

Its a big thing in Classic Mini World and its a well known phenomena that a great many cars are not really as suggested by their VIN plate or other stamped numbers due to the availability of to order plates and punches. Mk1 and 2 Coopers are coming out of the woodwork from every angle. this also happens with a lot of the cherished American Muscle cars taking on GT or SS guises from more humble origins. Maybe Supra World will ride the same road in the future where many more cars will carry a V160 or V161 VIN tag, probably a BMW gearbox and only those with expertise in the cars history and varients will know what to look for under the surface.

This was my problem with it, and surprised it hasn't been raised until now. Its big in the Ford world, particularly Escorts. The Retro Rides forum has a thread dedicated to reporting 'VIN Kits'

I dont think you should be legally allowed to reproduce VIN plates personally, and its something only the manufacturer should do, its dodgy ground

What happened to Jazz and his car ? not seen him on here or post for a while

Searching Jazz1 on this forum comes up blank and he hasn't posted on Instagram for 78 weeks. :search:

All his youtube videos seems to have been taken down too. There were a few posts on this build thread that seem to have been deleted. Shame as it looked like the car was finished, up and running. Jazz deserves a break as he had a lot of heartache with that car.

VIN plates can only be sourced via Toyota and if your car is a JDM import you are out of luck as Toyota UK won't supply one for a JDM car. I believe there are various nefarious ways to get this done and that there are many companies out there that would offer this service. Can't imagine their print will be the same or the stamped letters and numbers too as they are done the old fashioned way with tools and a hammer.

My mind didn't stretch as far a thinking about the extra ££££'s to be made from changing an auto to a six speed, as rider said for the less uninitiated this becomes a new unforeseen pitfall and also dodgy ground as mentioned above.

Yep. My Cossie has them redone, just to smarten up engine bay.

I never changed anything other than colour, as they were tarnished.

I can’t see a problem, until people start trying to be dishonest. But can never trust all humans unfortunately,

When I sold my Cossie, I had already shown him the original Vin tags and I had on a key ring the same guy made in the documentation for car.

Is that through experience? Have you tried TCB or Amayama? Its just a part number so surely it can be ordered anywhere?

This was my experience with my not so helpful local Toyota dealership. I asked them if they could get a new VIN plate made up for me. I took the car in, they copied all the details onto a specific form and took a photo as they didn't make them in house. They phoned me back a day later to say as it was a JDM they couldn't help. Toyota UK can/will only do UK cars. I didn't bother to investigate further after they told me this.

I have looked through Toyodiy over the years but haven't ever managed to find a part number for the VIN plate.

For an accompaniment to the DIY VIN plate customisers there are plenty of options out there.

There are Chinese Toyota VIN font engraving machines so anyone can start up a little business.

Ours are done the old school way and stamped with number punches.

Isn't there any legal process to go through to prove you are the owner of the vin number your asking to be replicated ?

Leaves the door wide open if there isn't

Just like we have on getting new reg plates made

yes a copy of the v5c to show the registered owner is requiried

In this case it would be nice to see but no.

These are more like ‘show plates’ going by your analogy

Do you actually check up on the Supra Registry to see if the composition of the car at birth matches the requested VIN setup rather than the V5 details?

Or is it OK just to change the colour, the transmission and the engine information on the non genuine VIN plate? You can add on big money. Pay for that respray from silver in the new extra value of a VIN matching new colour, silver to red seems quite a popular choice. Possibly pay for the BMW 6 sp conversion and some by adding v160 to the VIN tag.
