They're supposed to be open. They're a critical service.

I don't actually consider an MOT garage as a "critical service" provider, especially where other alternative means of transport exist, for the benefit of essential workers and those unable to work from home. Notwithstanding, I wouldn't deem a trip to an MOT garage as covered under the 4 strict exemptions to the 'lock down'.

Have a good look at Italy, we will go the same way. People can’t be trusted to make the right decision so the government will have to make it for them. Can’t believe the scenes on the tube this morning, people are so stupid.

Agree 100%, it is utterly appalling.

People seem to think they're infallible and invincible, and whilst that may be true for 99% of the population, it's the 1% who will end up paying the ultimate price. Unfortunately, due to our society's inherent holier than thou attitude and over inflated sense of self importance, we and our loved ones are being condemned to a fate far worse than Italy's. The statistics are, frankly, both damning and depressing.

As far as I'm aware, commercial vehicles have been given a 3 month grace period over expired MOTs. The situation with personal/company vehicles is still under review and as a result, MOT stations remained open to cater for the work force that need their car to do their job (such as district nurses, not people who are defiantly continuing to work).

Whilst I agree taking a Supra to an MOT station during this period is careless, I just thought I'd point out that there are cars out there that will still require MOT's to allow people to do their jobs. So there will be a handful of garages that will likely remain open until the situation is made clear

My mot is due end of April. My insurance has just come out for the year and I just taxed it at the beginning of the month :(

Not that I can use it . So I’ve ordered new valve cover gaskets so will get them done over the next few weeks as all of my jobs have been cancelled, don’t think I would want to be onsite at the min anyway..So I am now a home school teacher for my 4 year old twin boys:)

Keep safe everyone

It was a critical service if you were an NHS worker, police worker and so on, and needed an MOT before they loosened the grace period, reign it in.

Dnk's link explains it all, mot places allowed to remain open and you have to get a valid mot if yours expires before 30th March.

So the government could have just said "from today" but they didn't so what's the guy gonna do......

The government also made it abundantly clear and set out 4 very strict exemptions to the 'stay at home lock down'. For the avoidance of doubt, these exemptions are:

1. Shopping for essential necessities, as infrequently as possible.

2. Doing one form of exercise per day.

3. For a medical need or to look after a vulnerable person.

4. To travel to and from work, but only where that is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.

Now, unless I have missed something blatantly obvious, none of these exemptions would apply to this apparently quite unnecessary and avoidable journey. One cannot rely on the defence that one's very specific example hasn't been specifically outlawed in the face of the very strict exemptions set out by the government above.

Sorry, I didn't realise the OP is a NHS worker and his Supra is his only mode of transport.

Wasn't talking about the OP, MOT's in general, but you change it to suit your arguement. A lot of people do sod all to their cars all year and wait for the MOT to 'fix' they're issues, there will be a lot of unsafe and downright dangerous cars on the roads in the next 6 months, tough one for the Government to call, chance of spreading the virus more, or more crashes from dangerous cars.
