Restrictor or Wastegate?

Hi Guys,

As I've said in a previous post

http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8146

I'm having a boost creep problem. After I put on a 3" downpipe(and no cats) my boost keeps increasing untill the fuel cut (around 1.13bar). It was recomended in this forum that I fit a restrictor to my exaust. My mechanic thinks that putting a restrictor on would defeat the purpose of putting on the downpipe in the first place (which was to get more flow).

He suggested fitting a HKS tubular manifold with a external wastegate (very expensive).

What do you guys think?

Restrictor @ £15 or very rear tubular manifold @ £huge ripoff price.

No contest, most of us run restrictors. I have a 3"pipe and was running 1.4+ without the ring, now a safer 1.15 to 1.2 max.

I doubt you could take advantage of a special manifold as the stock turbos are not much good for sustained use above 1.2.

But if you have loads of money and are planning huge power, a new manifold will remove the most restrictive part of the exhaust system.

A new manifold wil lalso require new turbo(s) unless you go for a custom jobbie at even more ridiculous prices. On the road you will notice almost no difference between a system limited to 1bar with a restrictor ring, or a system with an external wastegate and the boost set "properly" to 1 bar. A tubular manifold is a lovely thing to have, but TOTALLY unneccessary in this case.

Sorry, I made a typo. The fuel cut kicks in at 1.31 bar.

If I was to go with the restrictor, where could I get one from (here in the Cayman Islands I might not be able to find one)? Is there a sorce online?

Thanks
