Andy Ven
Evening all, I have started to strip down my v160 gearbox so that it can all be checked and worn parts replaced. Does anyone know of a full parts list for the gearbox? I have removed an internal seal which seems to be a special made seal. Nothing like i have seen before. Has anyone else had their v160 or v161 apart and managed to source this seal? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Andy
j_jza80
Unless something has changed, you cannot buy any gearbox spares from Toyota anymore, as Getrag have stopped supporting the gearbox and supplying parts. From what I gather, the last stock was bought by Jack's Transmissions in the US. Jacks transmissions and Arnouts 'Suprasport' are the only companies around with any parts for these gearboxes, and I don't believe that Jack's will supply parts - they only do rebuilds themselves. You may have more luck investigating how the R34 GTR tuners and owners are getting around these problems, as those cars have effectively the same gearbox. Mo Reviews
I wonder if Getrag still supports the GTR variant of the box and if so, whether any of its components are interchangeable with the V160/1?
Noz
I'm surprised you've stripped it down considering everyone also mentioned on your other thread, spare parts are no longer available commercially or otherwise. I hope you find some in this situation mate. Not sure I'd have the balls to take it apart for a rebuild with no spare bits.
Jellybean
Jacks transmissions last I read, stopped refurbishing the Gearbox due to lack of parts

I would rather strip it and find out that most of it is ok than leave it and find out its a hand grenade in a few months time. So far, everything looks pristine. Believe it or not, the oil which came out looked like it had just been poured out of the bottle, it was that clear. The consumable parts (seals, bearings etc) at a push can be re-manufactured. Its just how much you are willing to pay. I knew that the gears are unsourceable; so if there was an issue, i would have just split the box for spares. Marty
I've got the full gearbox manual, scanned from somewhere. Attached are all the part numbers with prices at the time. Unfortunately some are fairly hard to make out. If you're nice to me i'll upload the whole lot:d
Noz
It does make me wonder why no one has made any synchros. I'm tempted to give it a go.
Mike2JZ
You can buy synchro from Toyota still...

Andy Ven
Is anyone aware of a gearbox refurbisher that scribes their initials onto the shafts in the gearbox? Mine has R.M scribed into the shaft with the number 586. Any one know what this is all about? Cheers Andy
Swampy442
Batch number/serial number maybe?
Andy Ven
Batch number/serial number maybe? Looks like it has been done after it left the factory. Its too non-uniform to be done oem. It has stamps on the shaft from when it was made with what looks like a batch code etc. Will have been done before it was hardened.
fastphil666
I used to work as a gearcutter for about 10 years, about 15 years ago. Theres no reason i can see why these gears and syncro's cant be re made. If only they werent so rare and expensive id buy a scrap box and get to work. Andy Ven
You are right. They probably arnt that difficult to make. The synchros are already being replicated and reproduced by synchrotech. To make the gears though, you want a brand new set, which have no wear so you know the size and tolerance. Making some off Second hand gears could be a recipe for a noisy box. I suppose its the cost and time to make say ‘50 Units’. How many people would be willing to buy them? And i suppose if a 1000 of each gear was made. The cost would be less but chances of people wanting them is slim now that other gearbox’s are more on offer. I have stripped mine now and everything seems to be bang on bar a small bit of wear on the 4th gear synchro which is mounted to the 4th gear itself. Steffen A
Toyota still has most of the bearings for the V160, gears and synchros are sold out though. I recently did the front input shaft bearing in one, and front and output shaft seal. Parts all from Toyota. Also i have all synchro's lying from Syncrotech for another V160 i'm soon to be changing for a mates box. So the V160 game is not all dead. In worst case, bearings and seals should be possible to get from a bearing shop. I know that a lot of the tractor mechanics get their special bearings from those.
