fastphil666
Hello everyone, my drivers front caliper has a habit of getting a bit sticky when not in use (all the time) im going to attempt to free it off but im pretty sure that will only be a temporary fix. Any good diy kits out there to rebuild them? Anyone done it with success? If all else fails, who do we pay to rebuild them? Thanks
rider
SRD is probably the first place I'd talk to about doing a refurb or exchange as they do offer this service and are reasonably priced. Having refurbed my own brakes and also bought refurbed calipers from SRD I'd say for the saving don't bother. Its a faff that'll end up in sore fingers stretching the dust boot over the pistons and probably the odd ripped dust boot along the way when you fit the retaining clip. Unless every penny really counts, get SRD to sort it for you.
Dnk
I've stripped and re built them. They're not hard to do but time consuming. Just freeing it off is waste of time and needs fixing properly, the pistons could be re usable, really depends what you find once you pop them out the calipers. My recommendation would be take both the fronts off the car and get them done by one of the companies offering this service. Unless your confident of doing the job yourself. If you split them like i've done you'll need new seals that fit between the two halves and Toyota don't sell them, CW on here used too, that's who i got mine off. You dont need to go this far too be honest. If you don't split them don't get them media blasted ! Swampy442
Get a Toyota caliper rebuild kit, they're pretty cheap. If its seizing up you may have a corroded piston/s and they'll need to be replaced.
griffsplace
Did mine using a kit off fleabay, once you strip them you will likely find some badly corroded pistons, which are available too, its an easy enough job, messy though, clean them up, reassemble, coat of hammerite in your colour of choosing, add some stickers and hey presto! rider
Good evening folks, i have a caliper off and apart ready to fit new seals etc to tomorow. Just a quick one, anyone know the torque spec for the 4 caliper bolts, that hold the 2 halves together? Tia The recommendation is that you don't split the calipers on the 4 or more pots as the hudraulic fluid flows between the two halves and by splitting you could end up introducing leaks. The join has to be capable of withstanding 800psi hydraulic oil pressure. The torque spec on caliper bolts though is typically 55-60lbft. Watch that you don't lose the sealing rings if you aren't replacing those with new ones.
fastphil666
It was recommended by chris wilson that i split the calipers for ease. I have purchased new sealing rings to replace the old. Lets hope they go back together ok then.
rider
If you wet the seals before fitting and drop one half on top of the other, then hand tighten a couple of bolts and you should be OK I've split calipers because it does make servicing a lot easier and they have been fine when rejoined, just needs some extra care in re-assembly. fastphil666
What are we wetting the 2 split seals seals with, rebuild grease or brake fluid?

Mk4Gaz
I did my own about 18 months ago. I bought a spare set that looked like they'd been at the bottom of the ocean! New pistons and seals, and a bit of love needed, but they finished up nice [emoji1303]
fastphil666
Those look good, mine arent bad to look at, just felt they could have worked better. Found 3 pitted pistons in the drivers caliper. My old szr had lexus ls400 calipers, they worked great after i fitted them.
fastphil666
Finished mine this morning, relatively easy job, took around an hour. The only issue really were the dust boots springs, they punish your fingers a fair bit Edited March 7, 2020 by fastphil666 (see edit history)

fastphil666
Just spent the best part of an hour bleeding the brakes, lots of air in there due to the calipers being off etc. Hopefully we're there now.
