Simo2007
I think my stock turbo seals are on their way out, so the time to go single has come early. I hear stock hybrids aren’t overly reliable. I’m BPU on a TT6 and I want to do this properly, should we be refreshing the bottom end on 25 year old engines as a matter of course if aiming for 600bhp? I’d love to be able to do a forged build myself but I’d rather leave it to the experts; I can get it down to the short block though on my own, and will be refreshing all gaskets and seals on the way. What’s the consensus? Gutted I won’t be able to enjoy BPU this year but want to do this the right way rather than the quick way. I’d appreciate any advice and/or recommendations. Style
If your engine passes a compression test with healthy numbers, I'd probably just do the gaskets and seals then call it a day. Water/Oil pump, belts, tensioner etc. would maybe be worthwhile though depending on their age and mileage. I had my 95k mile engine pulled apart at the end of last year and the bottom end was literally like new. Almost felt bad for disturbing it after all that time lol
Noz
Yeah good advice there from Style there. A rebuild will always be nice. But lots of people run the GTE or GE engine at 600 without a rebuild. Some need a rebuild without going single!
AC93
As above, if the engine shows to be strong then engine gasket kit and whatever seals you need and all ancillaries. I'm doing a forged build at the minute (VVTi NA-T) and didn't fancy tripling the power of 26year old pistons and rods so ordered forged .. crank pulley, oil pump, and all the belts and tensioners will be new. Job done, fit once and forget!
Simo2007
Thanks for the reply guys. Will get a compression test done ASAP. Are you doing the forged build yourself?
Gpro
Completely pointless building a forged engine for only 600hp, as long as your compression is good you won't need to replace anything apart from cams. I have had 2 supras both at 800hp with stock internals and never had an issue.
Simo2007
Did a compression test at the weekend. Warmed up for 10 mins, around 10s cranking per cylinder, both EFI fuses removed, however I didn’t realise I had to do WOT when cranking... 1: 163 psi 2: 163 psi 3: 162 psi 4: 162 psi 5: 165 psi 6: 163 psi Will repeat with WOT when I can, but I think I’ve got a healthy engine!
