sidewaysdan
So I’m looking to do a Na-t project but not sure what engine to use . Had a quick google search and seams the VVTi engine components are weaker than the non VVTi Does anyone know if this it the case .
Mike2JZ
2JZGE vvti rods are weaker than non vvti variant. Everything else is the same. If you use this as a base for your project then put some updated rods in it 2jzgte vvti does not suffer from this issue
AC93
I have a na/5 Supra ...I bought a GE VVTi engine for a few hundred quid and using that to build my NA-T. I've ordered Manley rods and pistons 86.5mm and the head is currently with the machinists being refurbed. VVTi NA-T should be quite a little powerhouse ! Style
If I was starting from scratch with the intention of forging it, I'd probably go for a VVTi engine as well. Has the benefit of running coil packs as well so no dizzy to worry about.
sidewaysdan
I was just thinking leaving it stock but now forging it sound like a good idea.. who did you order you rods and pistons from I have a na/5 Supra ...I bought a GE VVTi engine for a few hundred quid and using that to build my NA-T. AC93
I was just thinking leaving it stock but now forging it sound like a good idea.. who did you order you rods and pistons from Yeh I'm not gonna risk tripling the power of the N/A rods have had for 25 years, had 2 friends with NA-T's go pop in the last few months at 500 and 560hp. Then I need to get new bearings, oil pump and whatever else the engine takes with it! So just doing it once properly. Ordered my pistons and rods from Paul @ Whifbitz to join my BW turbo and a few other bits
Noz
Stock vvti engine will be weak. Cheapest way would be to buy a non vvti GE engine and swap the vvti onto it. Fast spoiling 600hp all day long! What ecu did they have? I think that can make a huge difference. My syvecs has pulled the odd error code which other ecus might have missed and then boom! Fast spoiling 600hp all day long! That was my original plan, I bought the VVTi engine just for the head, but it had done some miles. So instead of drilling out a VVTi feed on the non vvti block (otherwise you need a VVTi and turbo oil feed) I just decided to re-bore and forge the whole VVTi engine and refresh the head... My original N/A engine is mint, top to bottom its extremely clean which is a shame, but at least I have a good source of spares if needed one the VVTi is in and running

My syvecs has pulled the odd error code which other ecus might have missed and then boom! They had non-vvti NA-T.. one was running Links and all 6 rings went, he suspects a shit map. Not sure what ECU the other guy had. I have a ECU Master Black to go on
Noz
I take my turbo feed from an oil filter plate. Not sure what flow the vvti needs. But surely be able to do the same thing?
Kearney
I just bought a complete vvti gte engine and fitted it to my 94 n/a manual. I just went with BPU. Solid, reliable and looks tidy. Sold my non vvti 2jzge for decent money too so it offset the cost a bit.
