CEL weirdness

Had a weird check engine light today and was wondering if anyone has had this before.

So I put a different ECU in my car on Sunday in the hopes it'd affect another issue I was having - same part number, same plug, different shaped stickers (does that matter?), in my mind no different to my previous ECU.

It was fine Sunday and Monday but today the CEL and ABS lights came on. I put the paperclip between TE1 and E1 or whatever the pins are, constant flashing, no code. So I try again later, the CEL is now on whilst the pins are bridged and "flashing" but instead of going off-on-off-on it's constantly lit and gets brighter and dimmer. I pulled the battery terminals off for a few minutes to reset everything, reconnected it, same thing without even starting the car for it to record anything. I put the previous ECU back in and it's back to normal so obviously it's something to do with the new ECU, but I'm left wondering what is actually causing this behaviour. Maybe an internal short on whatever circuit causes the lights to come on? Maybe I'll have a poke around with the multimeter next time I get extremely bored.

My ABS doesn't work anyway so I understand the ABS light, but it's weird that the old ECU doesn't turn the dash light on for it.

Anyway sorry for the ramble, just a minor head scratcher for me.
