N/A Auto ECU faults

Most of the early stock ecus can have issues, the Autos suffer worse

The capacitors in the ecu will leak and fail as they get old which will cause gearbox control issues and running issues

They can be refurbished with the capacitors replaced.

Most ecu repair specialists can do this job but they have to use the correct parts

That's so much cheaper than I am being quoted. Maybe for a different level of repair?

I have had it rejected as unrepairable one - They would have charged about £120.

I have two new quotes based on pictures of the damaged area in mine. One is $300 (USA) and £250 from a UK ECU repairer.

I have not yet found a used working replacement, but have heard of one that may be available for £250.

Based only on other ECUs available, I would have thought it worth more like £125?

Anyway, my thinking at the moment is that I would rather get mine repaired thoroughly as surely all the used one will suffer the same fate eventually?

I have now had my ECU repaired by Avilec Ltd on the Isle of Wight. Total cost £312 - gulp.

Apparently multiple capacitors had to be replaced and tracks repaired.

In the month I have been looking, I have only heard of the possibility of one used ECU - and that was £250.

Any used ECU is likely to need repair if not done already.

This repair comes with a 2 year guarantee, which seems quite reasonable.

I'm in a similar situation with an NA Manual. Car wouldnt start after being stood a while. Diagnosed as ECU. Got a 2nd hand replacement £150 delivered (seen some sell for £100 and some asking £250..!!) Anyway replacement ECU fitted car started but not running right.

Idles at 2k rpm ish. Misfire etc.. If te ecu is in its place the car wont start. If hold it vertically the car starts. Had all wiring checked out and it seems ok and prblem coming back to a faulty (used) ECU. Apparently not sending a signal to the MAP sensor either.

In my limited experience the common issue is one of the capacitors leaking. If you open up the ECU I think you can see the leak(s) and consequent damage. Some failures seem to be easier to repair than others. I think you should be able to get your unit tested with a good level of certainty of diagnosis.

If 2 different ECU's giving similar problems, it can be more to do with wiring than anything else, especially if you need to hold it up for it to work. ECU inside is solid circuits, so should not make any difference what position it is on. If it idles at 2k its probably overfuelling, hence pops from exhaust, which might be mistaken with misfire. Also - Supra normally idles high when cold. Have you checked temperature sensor - one which feeds back to ECU? Is it still idle at 2k rpms when hot? Have you done pin test to pull out fault codes?

I've got NA auto and NA manual ECU's here, both were working fine, only took them out when I was doing engine swaps to TT and later to V8.

Mechanic checked it out and said no signal to map sensor hence idling high and running quite rich. !st ECU wouldnt start the car 2nd does but with issues. I'd possibly be interested in buying the NA Manual ECU off you however just going to see if I get hold of anyone to check the wiring before buying. Will PM you

I read a post on FB that N/A Auto ECUs particularly are prone to failure.

What would the options be if an ECU failed?

Are new parts available?

Is refurbishment possible?

Would an aftermarket engine management system be a better option?

This the guy I used he is very good and very reasonable he also does 3D printing which is reasonable to give him a ring ,I’ve already spoken to him about helping club members out
