Dnk
Car hire is a minefield, i've used Avis who aren't the cheapest but i got pretty good service and almost a brand new car
Dnk
Whatever you hire and from any company take 5 - 10 mins and go round the car before you leave the rental place. Some horror stories of customers being charged for damage that's already on the car
sidewaysdan
As dnk said. Take plenty of pics of the car before you leave As it can be a surprise a few months later when they charge you for (Damages) I genuinely use Avis not cheap but always had a good service.. think it’s pot luck seams to be worse in the summer months.. Mo Reviews
Make sure your pictures are time and date stamped.
Dnk
Make sure your pictures are time and date stamped. If you find damage report it before you leave is my advice and get a copy along with photos Much harder to argue with you if you have this in writing

Date and time stamped images are good at evidencing the extent of any existing damage.
Hobgoblin
I have used many car rental companies in France, and had problems with all apart from Avis. Used them the last 3 or 4 times, always new, clean cars, and no made up damage. I also buy damage excess insurance seperately, as it is a fraction of the cost of buying direct from rental company. Dnk
Agree with getting your own damage excess cover but you will have to pay out then claim back i think if you need to use it. I used Questor for mine https://www.questor-insurance.co.uk/

Dnk
Don't forget to check the interior too Also as i found last time in Spain check you get breakdown cover which seems to vary depending on which level of car hire you take out.
