sidewaysdan
Took the car for a quick drive on way back all of the dash lights came up. Steering went stiff then it just died on the roundabout.. completely dead . Windows slow to go up like battery was dead.. I’m thinking the alternator has packed up ?? sidewaysdan
Yea me too. I put it on charge for a cpl of hrs and it stated straight up. So that is telling me the alternator is done..
rider
If you measure the voltage before and after startup that'll tell you if its the battery or alternator. If you don't see around 14.5V when running your alternator isn't great. If you don't see close to 13V on standing after a battery charge then your battery is struggling. Another sign will be how quickly your battery charges. If its fast to charge from flat then its your battery that has had its day.
sidewaysdan
Thanks rider . I’ll have a proper look over the weekend
sidewaysdan
Put the tester on the battery after charge and it’s 12.80 And on idle/rev is 13.94 . So doesn’t seem to bad .
rider
Your battery is good but your charging voltage is on the low side of normal. Maybe you just went a long time between runs in the car as you won't normally be using the electricity heavy items like lights and screen heaters a lot at this time of year. Other than that its looking at the terminal clamps being secure and clean.
sidewaysdan
I was literally out for about 15 min. Was a warm day to. Clamps are fine and clean . Nothing unusual I take it out when I can but leave it on trickle charge in between . I’ll get it out tomorrow and let it run for a while and see if the voltage drops off
Delboy52
Seems you are not alone, I've been having similar issues with mine at the same time! A curse is sweeping through Buckinghamshire Are all your earth straps in good order? To suddenly lose power maybe there is a break in the circuit if not the alternator itself. sidewaysdan
So had a bit more time to look over the car today. Let it sit on the drive running for about ten mins and the voltage dropped right off to 11.50 whilst running.. and was still dropping. So it has to be the alternator right.. Delboy52
Yeah that's alternator alright. Mine isn't that bad and hasn't got enough kick to charge the batteries. Your voltage is so low it's no wonder it couldn't run the engine let alone charge the battery Edited September 24, 2019 by Delboy52 (see edit history)
sidewaysdan
Yeah thought so. That’s cool new alternator will be ordered and might as well treat it to a new battery also . Thanks for you input chaps glad it’s wasn’t a serious problem
