Alex G
hi guys, im looking into buying an Supra twin turbo, but have some questions. im focusing on the facelift models, but i dont know if i should avoid the VVTI's and strictly look for a regular 2JZ-GTE. i know the VVTI gives some extra torque, improved turbo spool and improved fuel efficiency. sounds good. i would like some kind of tune up to around 400-450 hp some time later. so is there any reasons to avoid the VVTI? i have heard Toyotas VVTI engines are on the realiable side, but is that correct for the 2JZ-GTE VVTI? is spare parts harder to get for the VVTI than the regular 2JZ-GTE? is the VVTI more expensive to maintain? i heard someone say engine response feels a little slower on the VVTI, is this correct? is tuning a problem/more limited options? other/any things to watch out for? inputs is appreciated. Scooter
I think the vvti helps the torque curve, so owners have said. Main (only?) downside I know of is the throttle body and fly by wire parts can give trouble (more so than the non vvti at least) I think it's one don't be too precious about it especially if you want a facelift as the amount of non vvti facelifts is pretty small. jonc
Don't be fussy about VVTI or not but buy the best car you can which has been maintained. I have a VVTI and the variable valve timing is a bonus. Pick up is very good .Apart from the head work the engines and turbos are the same from OEM. As Scooter has said the FBW throttle body is known to fail which is a bit of a pain. Tuning on throttle bodies is harder because of the FBW but BPU is the same across both Tiptronics are a little harder to lift the JSPEC speed limiting. I have had a pre and post facelift car and there are no significant differences in quality. Some will say there is but having owned this cars for 15 years there really isn't. But as said get the best car for your money which has had all the normal Sup areas worked on rather than worry about VVTI or not. Plenty of info on here about what to look for but areas of wear are Seals (cam, crank, valve covers etc) Suspension on originals will be tired. Valve stem seals Worn original turbos Crumbling intercoolers Crispy engine looms All the above are seen on most Supras that are original now apart from low milers and later cars. Style
Are the VVTi engines not also interference engines whereas the non-VVTi's are not?
WayneW
Only the 2JZ-GE VVTI are interferance engines mate

Swampy442
I really prefer the VVTI engine, the slug of low down torque is really noticeable, especially round town driving.
Alex G
thanks, really no reason to skip a VVTI then. now i just hope i can find the right one for me.
Swampy442
No, its the same engine, just with a different cam, the only extra consideration is a small filter to change in the VVTI solenoid, but that's it
WayneW
VVTI 2JZ are to my taste the better choice for a nice responsive street car yeah Can't wait to see mine next month between Lee's hands =D
Pete
i heard someone say engine response feels a little slower on the VVTI, is this correct? No. Having owned both I can say I much preferred the low down extra power the VVTi gives over the non-VVTi.
Scooter
Is the auto/tiptronic speedo/kickdown issue still an issue?
Pete
Is the auto/tiptronic speedo/kickdown issue still an issue? Yep. Short of replacing the ECU to sort it. I just don't go that fast. Darren / Wile has more experience daring to enter this zone than me, I think he said he's not had it kick down on him by not slamming his foot to the floor.
