griffsplace
Hi In performing the clean up of the underneath I have come across cracks in the steel. This has occurred on both sides. I am proposing to drill a hole at the end of the crack and then weld along it. Anyone else seen these, what have you done about it.

rider
As the crack hasn't split apart either laterally or vertically it's not likely to be a flexing tear as that would move it apart or downwards. It is an area that can rust from above, I don't recall if the gap is large enough that you can actually get a scope camera in there for a look. If it was my car, seeing the tear hasn't split, I'd do a simple stitch weld on it then grind that flat and keep an eye on it to see if it comes back. If it does then it you'd need to consider a reinforcing plate be welded. If it doesn't then you can put it down to something a previous owner did to cause the metal to fail.
