Noz
Evening all, I'm installing a reversing camera on a flip down number plate. I can't make my mind up where to locate a discreet camera that isn't visible, so using the plate. I want the ability to flip the front plate up so thought why not have a pair and use the rear to hold a camera. There wouldn't be much benefit me using to use the plates for avoiding speed cameras, as they won't be many wide supra's the same colour as mine, just in case you wonder if that's why I want them. It would be nice, to avoid cameras, but, much easier to just not drive like an idiot. So, reversing cameras. I'm installing sensors, colour coded and then smoothed so can't see them. Any advice on a camera + screen? The car's going to be an extra 7" wide so I'm hoping it will just be a help. It's been off the road for a while, so I don't want to dent it in the first few months driving it! With the sensors, I may end up not using it very often. Just when it gets tricky. Better safe than sorry. I'm also aiming to install it, to add updated technology into the car. Espcially if my girlfriend borrows it, or my mum! All input welcome Edited March 8, 2019 by Noz (see edit history)
Noz
From reading reviews, guides and some other videos. I came across this as a proposal. I've had cheap screens in the car before, it's never worked out well. But is spending more really better? I'm not sure. Thoughts guys? https://www.amazon.co.uk/AUTO-VOX-Digital-Wireless-Reversing-Monitor-CS2/dp/B07HHYMW4K/ref=zg_bs_1342943031_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9HJV1R3V4C97WKBB9ZG6
Big Mark
I have one that looks like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HD-Waterproof-170-Car-Reverse-Backup-Night-Vision-Camera-Rear-View-Park-Cam-TR/132692326153?hash=item1ee5143709:g:NjIAAOSwCMFaPT2b And I fitted it where the centre screw was for the number plate light. Fits perfectly and you can't even notice there is a camera there.
Tyson
The camera on the wife's sportage and the one on my cee'd are really good. But I think you might be better off getting one from a van as I assume they would have a wider angle lens for you wide rear
Ric
Yes, Big marks solution is fine and you cant even see it. Most double dins have a reversing contact wire that you can connect to the reversing lights so it comes on automatically when you select reverse. Big Mark
Exactly Ric, my camera will connect to the Double Din stereo once I get around to fitting it. Overall a nice neat solution.
nolizma
I know some cars even have deployable cameras in that place (above the plate). In case you don't want it visible at all. Also helps keeping it clean.
Noz
I think the above plate solutions do look nice. It's pretty tough to see the output quality. I think I'd love a double din setup, I need to buy speackers first lol man that sounds bad.
Rob W
A couple of pics of mine fitted, screen resolution is fine for what it’s needed for. I connected it up to automatically come on when I put the car in reverse, plus I can turn it on at anytime as well if needed.
Ric
Yep that is what i aim to do when i get a new stereo.

What head unit do you have and how did you connect it to the reversing light if you don't mind me asking?
Rob W
That's pretty neat! What head unit do you have and how did you connect it to the reversing light if you don't mind me asking? Headunit is a Pioneer AppRadio SPH-DA100, the first version to come out. Had it years and still working fine. The rear camera comes with two cables to connect:- Power lead - connected to rear reverse light and ground. Video lead - RCA male fitting to connect straight into the rear of the headunit, with a single cable to connect to the reverse camera input cable to know when to automatically bring the image up on the headunit screen. slugger1
One more quick question! Does your double din unit slot straight into the facia or do you need a cage?
