Doublefacy
Hi, I just bought supra and got this issue with opening boot lid. When I pull the lever inside the car, it seems like boot lid is not popping up enough to get through both positions on a latch. If I have someone to pull it up as I pull the lever - it opens fine, but wouldn't on it's own. If I'm all by myself , I can't open boot lid I was wondering if those could boot lid struts that might have lost gas and effectiveness over time, as I understand car has not been used all that much before me buying it. Although boot lid stays up pretty strong once opened. Are struts the ones responsible to pop it open or could there still be issues with latch being sticky? Spunkmeyer
I have this, just stuff a cloth or a ball under the lever, then til go open the boot. Remember to remove the cloth/ball before closing the boot. it not the struts because they aren’t in operation until it’s open open (they are horizontal and neutral for the 2 degrees the lid opens from the lever) I think it’s the cableing that needs tightening from the lever to the catch release
Eddie-S
There is a thread called 'boot release how to' that should answer your question but you have to read the whole thread as I can't remember which post the specific answer is on. Hope that helps!
SPG
If you have a facelift Supra then this is a known issue, or perhaps it was a well thought out safety feature .
Doublefacy
Thank you all, did not expect so many responses in such a short time. Good to see Supra community strong I do have facelift model (2001). Will try to find that How To thread about boot release. Meanwhile will follow advice of stuffing something under lever Just out of curiosity, what makes it pop open then if not struts? Is it rubber seal around the boot? Can't see latch doing it. Will check cabling and see if latch itself moves freely to fully release boot lid.
SupraTRD_MK4
Saw the post back then where the OP cut the spring maybe two or three coils less. Then he compressed it in a vice and reinstalled on the boot lock mechanism. Works perfect afterwards
Fitz
If I'm all by myself , I can't open boot lid Can you not just go to the boot and open the boot with the key?
Al Massey
Can you not just go to the boot and open the boot with the key? This! Just open the boot from the outside whilst you’re stood there

SupraStar 3000
I've had the exact same problem.
Annabella
You always just used the key though.
Doublefacy
I've had the exact same problem. What did you do to fix it? As much as I could use key to open boot, which I honestly haven't tried as I'm used to fob on my other car and didn't even think of it. I really want to fix the release from inside. Didn't had a time to look at it today - will try to run some checks tomorrow.
Swampy442
At the side of the boot in the channels, there's 2 rubber blocks, and 2 more on the boot lid. Thats what gives you your pop. Over time they become hard and compress and dont rebound. My 98 has the same issue
Scooter
Could try some sticky backed foam padded strips on top on those rubber blocks, if it then pops you can get some new blocks or just leave the foam. The key will always work if needs be.
wile e coyote
Well known fault with the face lift I replaced the blocks with brand new and did nothing I just use the key or keep lever pulled whilst missis open the boot lol
samdale
Well known fault with the face lift I replaced the blocks with brand new and did nothing I just use the key or keep lever pulled whilst missis open the boot lol Same. No change buying new blocks. If I'm carrying something in one hand, I've developed a technique of turn key, lift boot using shoulder under spoiler, remove key, lift boot with hand
jjs_82
My boot is the same. Have to use key to open it.
TuneR
My facelift was the same, my work-around was to wrap the belt around the release to keep it open til i got to the back if i had the car on. My solution was to get a pre-facelift mechanism which sorted it fine, i didn't replace the blocks or anything else.
