Universal Power steering cooler

Recommended Posts

Hi all, im planning on giving my power steering setup a overhaull soon as im getting some minor issues with it. Im going to stick a new pump on, replace the lines from the rack to the pump and cooler.

What i want to eliminate is the OEM cooler as they are pricey for what they are at Toyota. Im thinking a 4 row Universal cooler mounted behind the LH air vent and some fuel hose to the rack pipe work and some fuel hose to the reservoir return. Getting it mounted shouldnt be a big issue, just wondering if anyones used a universal cooler as opposed to the oe Toyota that mounts behind the middle vent.

Cheers, blow is my idea

Does the PS oil need to be cooled so much? I mean, might it have a negative effect if the oil can't get up to operating temperature as easily?

My line of thought is coming from the transmission coolers where having bigger ones means it takes longer to warm up to it's running temp. That's why there is an oil stat in mine that allows the oil to go through the engine rad as normal first, and open up an additional channel to the extra cooler if needed.

Kevin, I can give you the dimensions of the pipes meaning the length of them next weekend if its okay with you? You can get someone to fabricate it for you or if you good at brazing using oxy/acetylene, you can do it yourself mate. I would also look at a Merc salvage yard if I were you as a few models like my W209 have one for the steering as well. The difference is that it has like this tiny block around it but its not a block block but fins that are shaped to look like a rectangle so it aids with air passing by to cool the p/s fluid. Might want to check it out.

Cheers chaps, that pictures not to scale the cooler would be quite small, enough to do the job as the oe cooler, maybe 30cm in lenght. Possibly even a 2 row as i dont want the temp too cool. But something as good enough as the oe cooler lines but somewhat more simple.

Seen this and think ill be doing one very similar to it. Just cannot justify Toyota price on the pipe work, plus this will be more easy to replace and plumb in with fuel hose and jubilee clips. Seems like a nice summers weekend project for next year
