New Anti-Theft/Security device.

Following on from my stolen TomTom on sat, I have been thinking about anti-theft and thief-catching devices such as motorised trip-wires at the end of the driveway which come up with the car alarm, taser guns, uv-laser intigated air-ionisation carrying 50,000 volts electricity (phasers on stun!)...

anyway, I have come up with this idea, and I think it's workable. It's a temporary-blindness device.

I plan to mount a 35mw 532nm (green) laser diode to the actuator arm of a broken harddisk-drive, and then have this assembly mounted on a servo-operated tilt mechanism. The result being that, this device shoots side-to-side and up-and-down very quickly, blinding anybody looking through the drivers door.

I may have to research into powerlevels as I wouldn't want to cause more than 10-minutes blindness.

What do you think?

I think it would be brilliant! the whole passer by thing could be sorted by attatching some break glass sensors instead of say a proximity sensor.

there would be a legal issue i think, but if they hadn't of broken the glass the wouldn't of been blinded, or run down whilst staggering away from the car! maybe not ten minute blindess, just maybe 20 seconds or so, it would shit me up if i couldn't see for even 10 seconds! would seem like ages! :scare:

i'd definately fit one thats for sure!

Excellent feedback. Thanks guys. I think the broken-glass sensor sounds good. My alarm went off perfectly when they smashed the drivers-door window on Saturday, so I wonder if that was just the regular PIR 'eyes' things that caused that to happen. It's never gone off by accident, except when the central locking hasn't worked so I open the unlocked door while the alarm is set.

20 seconds of blindness would be enough. I ran after the pair of shits on Saturday and was only 30yds or so behind them, so 10 - 20 seconds of blindness would have been enough to let me catch them and at the very least get my TomTom back.

Good until the young boy down the road looks in for a sneaky peak. Plus if you went to any meets, everyone would know your car, due to the huge crowd of blind viewers.....

:D

If I can get the movement mechanism working fast enough (HDD arms are very fast.. hoping the weight won't be a problem), then it'd probably still get them as they broke the glass.

I just found the following, referring to rape-alarms for women.

Pepper spray, or Oleoresin Capsicum, may be an effective deterrent if

used correctly. According to PersonalAlarms.com, the spray has the

following effects:

“First, the person's eyes clamp shut, hard. Not only that, but if they

do manage to force them open they still can't see because the OC

dilates the capillaries and causes temporary blindness. Second, an

immediate fit of uncontrollable coughing doubles the person over

because the OC causes instant inflammation of the breathing tissues,

restricting all but life support breathing.”

http://www.personalarms.com/f_choosing.htm

Hmm. That'd be nice. Shouldn't be too difficult to setup for when the window breaks. I think if rape victims are allowed to then theft victims should be also.

Only problem is, with all this stuff hooked up, I'll be wanting people to try and break in!!

I think you are going to get sued for blinding someone - have another think on the trip wire idea :D Or another idea - daze them with a smoke device.... or or... or... a giant net!!! My gf thinks that alarms should be fitted that spray a permanent ink in the face of the person in the drivers seat... :D if it was a red ink, they could be caught red... faced??

he he he well, I could take a chance on the law thing. I honestly think they wouldn't know what had happened! They'd be like "uhh.. there was a flash.. and I couldn't see". Probably think they got some of the glass in their eye or something!

Did you see the one that they fitted on pimp my ride... there is a digital camera wired up to an internet connection and it takes a pic every second or something when the alarm is set off and it emails you the pics...

I was thinking about three very quick camera flashes, with pictures of course, but the theives around here assured me that as they are ballaclava'd (sp?) up, they don't give a shit about floodlights or cameras. Apparently they run when a house-alarm goes off..

Out of curiousity how was it stolen... was it visible from the outside or tucked away somewhere like your glove box?

It was very visible to anyone who was looking for it - was suck to the windscreen near the drivers door. I live on a "grove" (cul-de-sac) though, so we don't get anybody passing through, and the car is on a private driveway right down into the corner of the grove.

My replacement will be mounted behind the dash in place of the air-vent.

Off topic I know so sorry.

It makes me sick that these low life’s have rights. We had to spend £1000's at work getting skylights strengthened, as the insurance co assessors said a burglar could fall though if he trod on one. Good I thought and break both fcuking legs in the process of even his neck with a bit off luck. But no said the insurance assessor. We would be likely to be proved negligent for having taken inadequate precautions to provent injury to said burglar. I was dumb struck. I thought sky lights were just let light in and keeping rain out, not bloody platforms for thieves to stand on.

A word of advice if you have any ladders about make sure they are sound because if a burglar injures himself climbing it, he could successfully take you to the cleaners for damages. We were told two were inadequate. Funny that they past H&S inspections a week later. May be the assessor was worried about us being sued for splinters.

I think I need to put some signs up tell thieves in the areas the safest way in to my house. I suppose I should leave a door open for them so they cant cut them selves breaking a window, but then they might trip on the step. Oh bugger only one thing for it I'll put all our good stuff in boxes, not too much in each box, as back injuries are common, second thoughts it would be less risk for me if I just loaded what they want in to their car for them. I better get all my electrical stuff safety checked so they don’t get electrocuted when they plug my stuff in. ................................... Sod that where’s my baseball bat.

Anyone got any Tony Martin posters?

How about putting a house alarm siren inside the car cabin, you need one that they bolt onto sides of factories or something, those things are loud and no one could stay in the car with it going off.

I know they also work on batt backup so must be something you can do.

A rape alarm in the cabin would be pretty effective, I would have thought.

It would be except, in cases such as this, it's probably something like "right, you get your hand next to the window ready to grab the TomTom, while I pop the window", so, the grabber will have his hand going in the exact moment that the glass is shattered..

It would stop them taking anything else though, good idea!
