Andrew K Posted August 9, 2018 Share Posted August 9, 2018 Had a scary moment tonight and thought I had blown my turbo up! I went out for a spin in the Supra tonight and all was going well once warmed up, As I come onto a local dual carriage way I did a few hard pulls and all was still ok but got stuck behind some cars going slower so was then off boost following them until they moved out the way, I was in 5th gear at this time and the revs were fairly high so just stuck my foot down and when it came on boost there was a little judder then a really loud pop but sort of had a dead note to it! After hearing that I naturally slowed down thinking the worst and after a while noticed the turbo wouldn’t come on boost when putting my foot down I carefully drove it home so I could give it a good looking over to see what was the matter and noticed I had blown apart a join in my intercooler pipe work so not looking as bad as I was thinking. Question is why would this start happening now, it’s the first time Its ever happened after the conversion being done on my Supra back in November 2015. Is it a sign of problems starting else where and making it do this or just natural movement from the engine over time making it work it’s way loose and finally popping off when the car came on boost? The only thing that might encourage the pipe to come off is if the pipework is tight in that area and does not allow for much flex. As engine comes on boost it will usually rock in place, if the intercooler joints are not really flexible then eventually you will blow a pipe as the joiner will work itself loose. Phew that’s good to know and makes me feel a bit happier now, will be a job for the weekend now as it was to dark to do when I got home but while I’m doing it I will check how much movement there is in the rest of the pipe work. Although it was linked to a boost solenoid issue and the Syvecs ECU hitting the 2bar boost cut which was blowing the intercooler pipe off. Even then though they'd occassionaly come off under a hard boost run! Annoying but always had a spare couple of clamps in the car. Toolkit goes without saying! Pretty much glues them in place! /QUOTE] Yep, clean both pipes with brake cleaner, allow to air dry, spray with the cheapest and nastiest hair spray you can find and tighten up whilst still damp. stevieturbo Posted August 19, 2018 Share Posted August 19, 2018 Clean thoroughly, brake cleaner is great. Ensure there is a good bead on the pipe and tighten the clamp properly ( not over tight either ) and they will not come off unless using lots of boost.
