John GT
Hi there, have my stock TT parked up in the shed at the moment. When I go out and start it up every odd weekend there's a puff of smoke(not blue/white more clear) coming from the turbos themselves. If I turn the car off straight away and back on there is no smoke second time around. There is a smell of fumes from the puff of smoke if this makes sense. Would anyone have experienced something similar, it's like there's something seeping into the turbos/piping when it sits up. Thanks for any help ! bonus_2000
If it is after it has sat for while it could be valve stem seals. Mine used to do the same before I rebuilt the engine.
Tyson
So the smoke comes out of the engine bay is what you are saying from the actual turbos ?
John GT
So the smoke comes out of the engine bay is what you are saying from the actual turbos ? Sorry didnt make that clear, yeah it comes from the turbos in the bay itself. Valve stem seals are possible as it has sat idle for a good chunk of its life
Swampy442
Blowing manifold gasket?
John GT
Blowing manifold gasket? Yeah that would add up, I'll have to investigate it further. Is there a pipe/rubber hose between turbos that gives trouble too?
Scooter
As above it must have the common valve stem seal issue but also a gasket leak as the smoke normally comes from the tailpipe. Perhaps its the first decat joint (if it has one?) and the oil/smoke is coming up into the bay so it looks like it's from the turbo's? The rubber pipes won't be carrying the exhaust gases and so I doubt are the source of the smoke, but the two link pipes are worth replacing in the long run if they are original but will not be related to this issue. Chris Wilson
Sounds like the oil feeds or oil drains to the turbos, assuming stock twin sequential set up is the probable cause.
