ripped_fear
Evening all, I'm wanting to install a set of gates on my drive way, but due to the layout of my drive I'm a bit stumped for ideas. Now picture one shows my route to get my car next to the garage and the other box shows the route my other half uses as shes not the best at manoeuvring so refuses to back onto the drive. Now as you can see the full width of the drive is needed to be able to be opened and we have a public foot path between the drive and the road so the gates obviously cant open outwards and block said path, but equally they cant open in as there isnt room. I was thinking of a concertina setup which would work maybe split by a 30/70% so either one of us would only have to open one side when pulling in. BUT im concerned when shut they wont be sturdy enough encase someone was to lean on the gates. Any ideas? Ive seen the removable uprights but they are going to be too much of a faf. Am I missing an easy solution. Green marking the the fence, red marking the new uprights

ripped_fear
whats the opening to the left and whats behind you from where you took the pics to the left? the public path goes to the left and up the side of the house, the right is the neighbours drive. behind me is the drop curb and the road
peter richards
long run for the gates pillars would have to be substantial ,or jockey wheels on each gate to support it when opening , but it drops away so another problem there if you have wheels
peter richards
I think you will regret it , as they will have to be kept shut , and that will limit the room infront of the garage
ripped_fear
I cant see how they will limit my garage if the fold back against the walls, I have just been reading up and seen some electric gates have a rail in the ground wondering if a manual gate could do the same
Al Massey
Who owns the land circled in red? Couldn’t you just have a sliding gate that covers the whole length of the drive and it could tuck in on the land on the left? peter richards
I used to make and fit gates and railings years ago , only giving you my opinion , ive fitted quite a few in tricky places , when after a short time they were removed ,either not practical or just a pita to use . electric ones might work that open around the garage but that would cost a fortune , plus youd have to make sure nobody could get cought in it , health and safety

Thats the neighbours drive to the right, and the fence to the left is our garden I used to make and fit gates and railings years ago , only giving you my opinion , ive fitted quite a few in tricky places , when after a short time they were removed ,either not practical or just a pita to use . electric ones might work that open around the garage but that would cost a fortune , plus youd have to make sure nobody could get cought in it , health and safety Fair enough mate I appreciate your opinion, i personally dont mind the faf of opening and closing them, just so long as they are stable and secure. Electric gates will be out of budget unfortunatly.
Al Massey
So couldn’t you get a rolling gate that when open, goes in front of those bushes which is your house??
ripped_fear
So couldn’t you get a rolling gate that when open, goes in front of those bushes which is your house?? maybe yeah hadnt thought about that tbh, so it could slide behind the wall. May look into that. the only thing im worried about is when its shut it being nice and secure with no flex. we have a bus stop near by irritatingly so i know people will lean on it. But i do like that idea!
Al Massey
Well when it’s closed, surely it would marry up to a post? There’s a few electric gates by me that run the span of the drive way. And I plan to build the same but not electric and have one slide behind the other then both be behind the wall.

Yeah would meet up to a post for sure, I guess if it was 2 gates that slid to one side that would work yeah. may have to look into it, as like you I wouldn't go electric and also I would ideally like to make them myself.
