stevie_b
I have a manual NA with a W58 box. I recently had the box changed because the original one was very stiff to get into 1st and 2nd gear when cold. The new box is better, but I've noticed in 3rd gear, when I'm on and off the accelerator, it moves the gearstick back and forth a bit. Is this an indication of a problem, or is it normal? I've only ever seen that on really old cars where the mounts are a little soggy rather than firm. Mind you, the Supra is a really old car. Scooter
Not sure if it'll help your specific issue but there is a little semi sphere cup plastic piece in the shifter that can be worn and also the rubber bushes on the shifter cradle that you can replace with ali ones, which may help the shifting or positivity of shifts? http://www.w58bushings.com/ https://xcessivemanufacturing.com/mazda/rx-7/fc/toyota-shifter-bushing-series-1.html Edited June 21, 2018 by Scooter (see edit history)

Dnk
If it was the mounts wouldn't it do it in all the gears not just 3rd ?
Chris Wilson
Just remove the surround and boots and look if the whole box is moving or just the lever? I would imagine the whole box and engine is moving, can't think of anything that would cause the gear lever to move back and forth unless the synchro collar is moving which would suggest the box is due some major attention!
