Power Steering Pump -- whine after Fluid change

Jellybean

Recommended Posts

Hey

I changed the Fluid for ATF , turned her on , turned the wheels side to side, to flush out any air , topped up as required

Its not a bad whine but she is louder than before , air still in there I presume?

Am I missing something

how many times have you turned the wheel from side to side? best thing to do is jack up the front and keep turning full lock left and full lock right with the power steering cap off (engine must be off). Do this about 20-30 times whilst keeping an eye on the power steering fluid to ensure it doesn't get too low.

Leave it overnight with the reservoir cap off. This allows air to migrate out. I see a lot of PAS issues on the MKIV these days and have gone to some trouble and expense working out their idiosyncrasies that occur in old age. I have also sourced a supply of new PAS pumps that are far cheaper than Toyota, but unlike the Ebay ones do not grind themselves to a paste most of the time, taking the rack with them. They DO need a minor pulley mod though, which I can do.
