ballsdeep
Iv done some searches but nothing quite matches my symptoms. Im getting a noise only when upto temperature my first thought was its the spigot bearing but i only had this done last year along with the release bearing, clutch and flywheel. Iv had very little time to investigate but what i have found is the noise almost certainly goes when the clutch pedal is pressed. The only other thing i have checked is the viscous fan which seems to have more resistance when cold than it does when upto temp? Cold it spins maybe 3/4 before stopping, hot it will spin maybe 2+ times. From what iv read it should be the opposite? I can also stop it by hand when upto temp. Any thoughts on this? Could it be something else maybe gearbox? Really im clutching at straws, I’d like to think a spigot bearing should last longer than 12months and less than 2/300 miles. Dr_Doom
Are you running the W58 5 speed? They’re notorious for this noise, I think it’s the input shaft bearing in the gearbox. Is it a whiring noise on idle that goes when you press the clutch pedal in a bit? 2 of the 3 boxes I had did this even after a fresh clutch, release bearing spigot ring etc... ballsdeep
Yes w58 on na-t so I guess it’s understandable if it’s starting to fail now. It’s been a great box so I’l look into repairing it. Is it a rebuild job or can anyone tackle it. I’m not overly impressed with dropping the gearbox again, is there any checks I can do before I commit? Dr_Doom
It’s a bit of a lottery really. It could go forever like that or it could break really soon. The W58’s do seem to last longer with NA-T than NA-TT. I think it’s the low down torque of the GTE engine that kills them. I had 2x W58s break at BPU power (400ish) before I decided to bite the bullet and go 6 speed. The 3rd W58 I had I sold to Josh on here who used it on his NA-T for quite a few years before it broke on him. I’m not sure about rebuilds etc as they only used to cost £200ish second hand so no one bothered. Now they’re going for silly money it might be worth it but they’ll always be a ticking bomb at 400ish bhp. Im not sure whether they can be strengthened? ballsdeep
Thanks I may look into getting a quote, it still drives and selects gear perfectly fine. When they do let go will I still be able to nurse it home? It’s just my luck, I Was planning to sell it in the summer too.
ballsdeep
Just had a quote to replace the bearings of £295 or £445 with them dropping the gearbox so I’m quite happy with that considering the price of second hand boxes.
