Kendo11
Have a bit of a concerning steering issue at the moment. Getting a lot of feedback through the wheel at about 60mph+ and doesn't go if I try to drive on through it. Vibration actually remains all the way back down to low speed. Veering slightly to the left & feeling a bit of resistance & more vibration when turning to the right (which makes me think it's mechanical). Had all wheels tracked & balanced recently & rubber is in ok condition. Pump, rack etc?
Frank Bullitt
Have you had the wheels off to make sure all the weights are still attached?
Kendo11
Have you had the wheels off to make sure all the weights are still attached?Yup. First thing I've done is check the wheels to eliminate them. Tyres ok, weights all present, no cracks etc.
Tommyd16
Had the car on a ramp and checked for play in the wheel bearings and bushes? Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 position and check for play. Same at 3 and 9 o clock. Pull down on control arms and drop links etc to see for any play knocks. Eliminating that could just just be a sticky calliper or warped disc
Swampy442
*Ahem * Come to my unit? About a mile from your house?
Tommyd16
And pretty obvious but check power steering fluid. The pipes and cooler are prone to corrosion and can leak
Kendo11
*Ahem * Come to my unit? About a mile from your house? Thanks so far chaps. Have done most of the usual checks with no joy. Swampy are you there at all during the week?
evinX
Cracked alloy wheel? Steering rack damage? Shock absorber/spring damage?
Dnk
Check the caliper isn't starting to seize
Kendo11
Well by process of elimination and throwing time and money at it I think I'm heading down the route of needing a new CV joint or shaft. Going into a garage this week for more analysis and hopefully a fix.
SupraLEDrears
Well by process of elimination and throwing time and money at it I think I'm heading down the route of needing a new CV joint or shaft. Going into a garage this week for more analysis and hopefully a fix. If steering wheel is shaking, it's mostly to do with the front, so doubt it'll be a cv joint. I have the same issues and i'm thinking it's a balljoint. So far replaced everything apart from the hubs and control arms. Waiting for a front lower arm and then my front will have been redone. Kendo11
Have had it looked at today and it is indeed part of the prop area that's causing the problem. The central support bearing specifically, the rubber around it is extremely perished causing movement of the shaft. Similar I think to this problem I dug up: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?180452-Gearbox-Prop-Shaft-Vibration
Kendo11
Video here: https://youtu.be/Bk1TcYB6o2o The rubber around the central bearing is really badly perished, vibration only comes on under heavy load. Cruising along is fine. Don't think if this is a common problem but seems to be the cause of my issues. Opinions welcome.
