Car Derived Vans

Hey guys. Just wondering if there are any owners of car derived vans (such as the astra vans or ford escort vans) on here. I just wanted to get some opinions on reliability. I've already spent £1000 on the BMW and it's still not quite right yet, so I'm honeslty just looking for something that I can service and not get any major trouble from for a year or two.

I'm trying to make an effort to cut my spending so I'll be selling off the E46 330ci I bought in September for something more economical and more practical. Considering I can pick a van up for less than what my car is worth, and I'll be spending half as much on fuel this seems like the sensible option. At the moment I've got my eye on the 1.9CDTI Astra vans. Model year is about 2006-2011ish I think but I've not been paying too much attention to the year.I quite like the older ones as well, so if they are just as reliable I'd probably pick one of them up for the price difference. Is there anything I need to be wary of? Clutches going at certain miles? Engines dying etc?

The 6 speed M32 gearbox can be troublesome (usually 6th gear bearing), and swirl flaps on the inlets, either get them blanked off or if the ‘actuator rod’ (can be seen when opening the bonnet) is loose its already too late and needs changing.

Apart from that just common diesel things to watch for - egr, flywheel etc.

Good workhorses tho, plenty of mpg and cheap to maintain

1.9 Vauxhall engines have faults with the inlet manufold valves, they clog up with carbon and require a replacement manifold iirc... However they are pretty good engines other than that! If caddy vans are in your line up they are pretty bomb proof but keep an eye out for gearbox issues.... 5th gear mainly as the rivetts fall out... The Vauxhall 1.7 Isuzu engines are pretty much bomb proof..
