Alas we've ultimately been told nothing new about the car we we will eventually be able to buy.

 

Now we have to wait over a year to get the next installment of the never ending new supra story.

 

I think Toyota would have been better off not showing anything. I'm very disappointed in how they have played this.

 

If they had shown this toy car along with some information regarding the road car it might have worked.

And I'm biased. We've just bought one :D

 

I absolutely adore my GT86, I personally don’t think it needs more power and people who say it does clearly don’t understand what the car is about. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have plans for upgrades/modifications because I do. I’ve already fitted a Cobra resonated exhaust and Cobra secondary decat. The chassis in the GT86 is spot on, as is the driving position. I enjoy driving it every time I get into the car!

I quite like the Z4, especially the 35iS DCT twin turbo version with 340 hp, it's possibly going to be my next toy

 

Make sure you do some research on the reliability of the E89 Z4. They seem to be quite problematic compared the model it replaced.

 

c and d rule me out for buying one if thats the case

To be fair, I can wait, but the manual option is a must. Otherwise it's a 911, Cayman GT4 or Mustang next.

Good to hear, having 2 mkiv's seems a waste and the way (even) auto tt's prices are going i have my eye on a GT86 as it's getting close to straight swap territory and they sound like some good nimble fun at legal'ish speeds

There is a little bit. From the top gear link I shared :

What about the mechanicals? “I spoke to Supra fans. The six-cylinder engine, turbos, and front-engine-rear-drive layout are vital.” BMW does those things doesn’t it? “Yes, so we collaborated.”

 

Which means, and Tada confirms this, the Supra won’t use the Lexus V8. A BMW six then? “Few car companies have straight-six engines,” he replies. “Toyota did but it doesn’t any longer.” Toyota’s European R&D head Gerald Killmans later confirms that it’s a recalibrated version of the BMW engine. We suspect the M3’s twin-turbo. That means 450bhp ballpark.

 

What about a hybrid? “We are looking at it, but it’s not decided,” says Tada. Given Toyota makes a hybrid Le Mans car, that consideration must be pretty serious.

 

Suspension, Killmans says, is also similar in basic principles to the BMW system, but with a different tune. The Supra will also be built at a BMW factory, Tada acknowledges.

 

It will carry GRMN badging beneath its Toyota logos. That’s Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nurburgring. GR is Toyota’s new specialist sporting division. Tada says there will be GRMN versions of lots of Toyotas, starting with the lairy little Yaris GRMN.

They are great fun, it’s a real drivers car. Don’t get me wrong it has it flaws as do most cars, but if you do your research you can pick up clean, well looked after examples for good money. It’s worth investing in some decent rubber as the stock cars come with Toyota Prius tyres and they are crap. I’ll be looking to fit the Tuning Developments N/A package which adds around 20bhp/30lbft in the midrange and this can be done for circa £1500 fitted.

Reading the articles coming out from Toyota interviews, seemingly the Supra will have a lower centre of gravity that the GT86, and a 50/50 weight distribution.

 

It’s also to have a shorter wheelbase that the 86, and will be strictly a 2 seater.

 

They were again confirming straight 6 turbocharged engine, after asking “supra fans” all over the world (especially in the United States) what engine it should have and them mostly saying that. However they added that the same people weren’t bothered about it having a manual option, so seems unlikely one will be offered (however this last point wasn’t expressly said, and was the interviewers feel of the answer)

 

Car and driver got this out of them though with regards to a manual

 

• Tada tells us that there wasn’t much demand from Supra enthusiasts for a manual transmission in the street model—although we find that hard to believe, and he definitely didn’t ask us what we thought. Yet despite that fact and much reporting to the contrary, hope for a manual may not actually be dead after all. When asked if a stick could be added into the mix, he demurred and expressed his desire to make that happen, saying earnestly and with a bit of a twinkle in his eye that he will “try to do his best.”

 

Tada says the team is also considering a model that leverages Lexus’s latest hybrid powertrain as seen in the LS and the LC, although cost remains a worry there.

 

• The streetable Supra won’t have brake-based torque vectoring, instead being fitted with a true active rear differential.

Sounds like you have the tuning bug a bit still :)

 

I think I'd probably just leave as intended, I get the tyre thing but I think that makes it lively/playful as standard.....if its NA Supra quick (which I'm pretty sure it is) that's enough really as it should be a lot more B road friendly, I really should have a go in one I think.

Yeah if sliding the back end of a car out at 20mph is your thing then the stock tyres are great. But when you want to push on round the twisters the stock tyres aren’t great IMO. In stock form the GT86 is on par, if not a touch quicker than an N/A supra. I beat a N/A supra at Suprapod back in October, although it was close. I’d defiantly recommend for anyone to have a test drive of the GT86 they are superb!

Yeah if sliding the back end of a car out at 20mph is your thing then the stock tyres are great. But when you want to push on round the twisters the stock tyres aren’t great IMO. In stock form the GT86 is on par, if not a touch quicker than an N/A supra. I beat a N/A supra at Suprapod back in October, although it was close. I’d defiantly recommend for anyone to have a test drive of the GT86 they are superb!

 

I really like Chris's GT86, and wouldn't mind one as a daily, but they are probably still a bit too much money at the moment, and I think I'd cry at the MPG compared to my 40-70mpg diesel Fabia VRS :(

I've driven some incredible systems.

 

In what, just out of interest? I'm not sure if it's because I'm used to a 1.5 way in a RWD car, and you can sort of feel it "push" you through a corner, but I took my mates focus RS out and I found the whole system quite annoying.

Boxster and Ferrari Portofino stand out for me in this regard, but in stuff like the Cayenne Turbo it's arguably more impressive simply because of the sheer weight of the car. Modern systems are very smoothly integrated.

 

That Focus is miles better with everything switched off, though.

To be fair the MPG is good thanks to Toyota D4-S injection, on my daily commute which is 14 miles each way I get 38-40mpg. The best MPG I’ve done was 50.5 MPG on a 132 mile drive to Norfolk. That was with cruise control set at 70-75mph the whole way though.

Actually, that doesn't sound too bad at all, but I bet you're not sat in traffic crawling along for pretty much 8 miles there and back everyday like me though, that's what eats up the MPG :( But I still setlle at 40mpg by the time I get to work or home.

 

But I really do like your car, and regularly have to stop myself going to take a look at second hand prices, they are far too nice for the way I battle through traffic each day not giving a shit about bumping my daily.

Depends how you drive, I've got D4-S in the IS250 and the weight of my right foot is the difference between 26 MPG and 38 MPG on the motorway. Edit: I'm actually inclined to think the D4-S system makes no difference, as if I stick to 70 on the motorway that's about 2000rpm, which I think is below the cut off point for the direct injection kicking in.

Great engine 450bhp stock is good bpu mods will no doubt see 540bhp or more, a stage one chip on the stock engine stock dp see's 502hp

 

I wouldn't be so sure - if the B58 engine is the one that's going in there, it's A LOT harder to tune than the N54 of the previous era. From what I've seen, there will be an air to water intercooler built into the intake manifold, which means no upgrading the FMIC etc. The turbo is probably also going to be smaller than the N55 as well, and on a cast manifold, so the peak horsepower potential is probably not that great.

Maybe it’s a slightly different system then, even when I’m on a spirited drive I see no less than 27mpg.
