Cheap PC - where is best place to get one?

Hi

My home PC has just died and I want to replace it with something new and cheap. Are you able to get new desktops for approx £300? and where, other than Dell website, should I be looking?

I don't need any fancy graphics capability. Just something as fast as my old one 1.7Mhz, with more than 40Gb HDD and with XP installed

Any advice welcomed.

Dell PCs are very good value for money but they'll always upsell you on the offers they advertise. Delivery is expensive too. (We often challenge our customers to actually buy what they've seen as they make it very difficult!)

At a risk of being slapped for hawking our own goods....

We have PCs available from 324 inc VAT. You can tailor the PC to whatever you want.

(Courier delivery £15 ex VAT)

If you register on the site then you get the better prices across all products.

Maybe I should set up a club discount scheme or something.

I always use http://www.novatech.co.uk because their prices are good but also cos they're local to me. Worth a look though.

Work out about the same prices as ours once you add/remove various software bits. Their delivery is cheaper at £7.49 though.

We don't try to compete with these kind of people. We're SME really and only use quality components and are authorised disties for all the big players.

Our business customers like us simply for the stability of the systems and our customer service. We build a good rapport with people.

If you do go to DELL then call them up `it will always goes to a far eastern call centre` and firstly spec up the PC you want with the minimum of additions, eg basic spec leaving out things like DVD writer, go for CD writer only etc and get them to give you a price.

(NB IMO as a basic starting point your better going for a Dimension 5000 rather than the cheaper 3000 as the 5000 is component/motherboard upgradable for the future).

Wait until the end of the month or even better today the end of the calander quarter as with all IT companies they have to make targets.

Get your haggling head on and then start building up the spec but at the same time try to keep them adding in things at the minimum costs they can do it for. You might be supprised what you can get and end up with! Its amazing what they will throw in to get the deal, printers, extended warranties, additional software, upgraded monitors, additional RAM etc.

The key is to get them to give you things that would be of value to you and low cost to them and you will drive the deal! NB always good to have an imagionary spec of a PC and pricing that you can use to drive down the price and be prepared to walk away from the deal if you cant get the price you want.

DELL to be honest are good, and their service/build quality is good.
