Suspension Probs, Cant Part with my 19"s

Hi all,

Ive asked before and ive been told that i should ditch my 19"s if i want to improve my very very poor handling (thanks CW :))

My suspension is shot it! the car sits way to high at the front and way to low at the back. Its handling is deteriorating rapidly and im starting to worry for my safety :help:

My problem, i cant get rid of my 19" Blitz Technospeeds! there just too nice and they cost me a bomb!!!

But, ive got to do something and preferably have some kind of height adjustment to bring that front end back down, or is it sitting high because of my 120,000 mile knackered suspension?

I know Chris Wilson says i will never have good handling with 19"s but ANYTHING has to be an improvement over what i have to put up with now!

Any suggestions or users of 19"s with aftermarket suspension?

Many Thanks

Scott

Scott, have you tried your car on smaller wheels? Just wondering if it would be worth borrowing a set of stock 17's or aftermarket 18's just to swap over and try as a test to see what a difference it makes. It'll then give you better idea of how much the 19's are to blame and whether the handling versus the looks is really worth it.

Is your 120k mile suspension all original then? Mine was changed recently at around 45k mile and it was in poor condition, so I can't imagine what condition your dampers, bushes and springs are in by now. It's an expensive job, but replacing all your bushes/arms and fitting new dampers/springs should absolutely transform the ride and handling quality.

If you are use to stock UK suspension, switching to Japanese branded coilovers is going to be a huge change, as the ride will be so much more firmer than you are use to, especially with the 19's on. Have you considered either Chris's set up (which a lot of members rave about) or going for a set of yellow Bilsteins and a set springs that lower the car slightly?

If you need any prices on stuff give me a shout, as I have part numbers and prices for all replacement arms, bushes, coilovers, dampers, springs, etc.

Have you ever taken it to a track to try it out properly? Or are you just chatting about daily driving?

Ive taken the car on some pretty demanding country lanes and lets just say I was not doing slow speeds...

Ive been through.. Stock / koni adjustables / TRD and finally ended up staying with the Teins..

Rubbing wont be an issue as you can fully adjust the height and the hardness..

If Im going on country lanes with dips etc etc I harden the setup buy 25 - 50 %

I'm on virtually your exact setup, 130k, standard suspension, standard height. 19" blitz z1's 235 35's front 275 30's rear. Since everyone agrees 19's are bad for handling all i can guess is i'm getting too old for this game, as the last time anything slipped from under me was back on stock 17's a few yrs ago.

Lots of options then. great info people thanks.

Does anyone have rough ideas on prices of these options

Tein Flex Kit £??? (Im guessing around a grand)

Cusco Coilover Kit £???

Bilsteins + Lowering Springs.

NIC,

Chris wont do anything with his set up on a car with 19's. he told me i had to ditch them before he can help me.

Yes my suspension is about the only thing i have left to renew now as its original (10years old :help: ).

Understand exactly where your comming from with the 17/18's but its a matter of finding someone willing to let me try them and having the time to do it.

Im pretty certain that somthing on the suspension side is totally had its last day.

Whatever i decide to do with the suspension i will be looking into changing some of the bushes etc, not sure on how far you can go with this but i am on a budget so i can go stupid with it.

I correct myself, Im on 275 on the backs but changing to 285 when my tyres arrive.

MLC,

Do you find that the rear wheels sit perfectly in the arches but the front wheel arches are about 4" from the tyre?

This is how my car has gone. someone asked me the other day if i was running "OFF ROAD" suspension on the front

:soap:

I have 19 inch bbs which were on the car when i bought it, also veilside kit.

It looked like a dog with the original suspension which was standard springs and bilstein shocks.

Bought a set of JIC FLT2 coilovers and lowered it to what looked good.

The change was dramatic especially with a front strut brace, these you can set to whatever height you prefer, transformed the looks of the car and it is now like driving on rail tracks - suppose it all boils down to what you want to do with the car / cosmetic appearance.

one question i have always wanted to ask... why do running 19"'s make the car handle poorly, i mean i have 19"'s and it handles ok (will have new suspension soon to)

Chris Wilson's posts on [thread=5550]THIS THREAD[/thread] are very informative on the subject of wheel sizing/handling.

Get the suspension replaced asap. Your tyres will wear very pregressively rapidly as the shocks get worse. The car will also skip a lot in the wet, particularly over drains/manhole covers & become very twitchy. Voice of experience speaking here.

Im tempted to try some lowering springs for a quick fix.

Would like the Tein Flex Kit but i havent got a grand to throw at the car at the moment.

A grand  I should be able to get them delivered to you for considerably less than that, email me if you want some prices.

I had a 19 with Tein Suspension set up on my first Supra. The car's handling was great. As I remember, the 19's size of tires were 235 in front and 295 in rear.

Hi Scott,

I think all you have to do is replace a new set of suspension. Try TRD, HKS or Tein. These three are good since I had all of them before on previous and current Supra. Plus, please keep your 19" because they do look awesome on our Supra.
