pedrosixfour
It depends on what the issue with your own alternator is. A set of brushes, a regulator or a bearing or two are easy fixes for any place doing alternator repairs. But something like a worn shaft or barly burnt windings make a repair uneconomic. Agreed but get it checked out before you lay mucho green on a new one
pedrosixfour
Oh for sure. But we get a lot of rotational electrics (alternator and starters) repaired in our line of business (forklifts) and we see a lot of the replacement components used failing long before (as in within 12 months) a decent used or new replacement unit might. It seems to be a common issue. I did have a new replacement alternator for the 1JZ fail within a couple of hours of fitting, but it was replaced with no questions, as a new unit is covered under warranty, whereas a repaired alternator is a bit of a grey area. They can always claim it was some other part that failed this time round. Sometimes a spurious new replacement doesn't cost much more than a service on a twenty year old unit.
