FINED, BANNED OR YOUR CAR CONFISCATED: HOW WILL THE NEW EU DIRECTIVE AFFECT YOU?

An EU directive outlining cross border enforcement for a series of traffic offences was approved earlier this year.

The UK, Ireland and Denmark will have until 2017 to implement the rules, which include being able to target foreign motorists for offences including not using a seatbelt, drink driving, using a mobile phone and ignoring red lights.

For first time, EU countries will have a designated 'national contact point' in which prosecuting authorities will be able to access a database to trace foreign drivers.

Suspected offenders will then receive a letter from the authorities in the country where the offence took place to warn of the legal consequences if fines isn't paid.

British officials will be able to use the new law to pursue foreign motorists who commit offences in Britain, while foreign authorities will be able to do the same to UK offenders

The level of fines applicable is the same as for drivers of cars registered in the country where the offence is committed.

In France, British motorists could be banned from driving and have their cars confiscated if they accrue traffic offences.

Just on pistonheads and thought I'd post this up. Sorry it's a bit 'Dad' like but would hate to see someone lose their car!

It's nothing new mate, been happening for over 10 years, heard of a couple of drivers getting their cars impounded during Le Mans weekend over the years.

Sounds like rubbish to me...

It's not, but what does it matter, you have your fun you take the risks.

It's always been a €90 fine, then €350 fine, then they take your car if you've really been speeding at a high level. It's the way it's always been mate for many years.

Bit of old news that, it came into force just before last years Dragonball, and guess what, nothing has changed. I don't know of one person that has received anything in the post.

They have always been able to prosecute us over speeding cameras, but they don't as it costs to much to take us to court over cross country borders and legal systems.

that article is dated 2015, and is pretty put of date, there's a lot more up to date articles that were posted up before last years DB. They include the information that they now have access to the DVLA to obtain details, whether they would do anything with those details I doubted very much, and I haven't heard of anyone that has had a single letter.

Well, we must have got our wires crossed, as for months in the pub we were both sure his ring trip was the same weekend as DB, but Monday night we both clicked that they were a weekend apart, doh! lol
