Need4Speed
I've had a search but not found any hints... has anybody got any helpful advice for removing and replacing a SMIC?
carl0s
It was a bumper off job for me if I recall correctly. JohnA said he managed his from inside the front wheel arch.
Need4Speed
Cheers carl0s To clarify - I'm putting a new SMIC in, not an FMIC.
Chris Wilson
Headlight out, bumper off, wheel arch liner semi removed, and the liner BEHIND the IC fully removed, you the have access to all the bolts. If the ones removed that need to enter the new IC itself (duct and some bracketry bolts) have rusty threads at the very least wire brush them and grease them, if not renew them, you don't want them galling in the alloy and maybe snapping off. Straightforward job, easier on a ramp but entirely possible "on the deck". Ring me if you have a problem.
JohnA
I just needed to lift the car on the driver's side, wheel off, arch liner off, headlight off, (maybe airbox off, can't remember) and then undid the intercooler pipes Got to be careful when inserting the new SMIC not to hit the fins on the disc brakes (I negotiated the UK discs, and my patience is measured in milligrams, so it's certainly doable) You have to think laterally though, during refitting the front ducting goes in first, then the SMIC is held up on a box or something while you screw the ducting to the core (didn't use all screws, no need to) then tighten the core, finally the pipes all around. If the 'new' SMIC is not 100% new, make sure you've washed it inside out with soapy water.
attilauk
i did mine the way Chris said, on the floor with a trolley jack, it took me about 4 - 5 hours all in but i was taking my time to make sure i didn't miss anything
Need4Speed
If the 'new' SMIC is not 100% new It's very new! not to hit the fins on the disc brakes I'm replacing the discs and pads at the same time.
