This is something I have been meaning to post for a while so here goes!

So July 2016

I have owned a 93 red Uk tt6 for 16 years and love it then this completely stock black 96 Uk tt6 was advertised and paid a deposit over the phone and agreed to pick it up the following weekend. It was a long drive especially the wife and 2 young kids one under a year old the other only 4 the journey down took around six and a half hours a proper family outing:D

We collected the car from New Romney on the coast in Kent and drove back to near Heathrow to a premier inn, checking in at 01.00am!

The day after we called in at the brother-in-laws at Beaconsfield then home all without missing a beat over 300 miles.

Two issues became very apparent on the drive home:

1. It needed rocker cover gaskets as the oil was running down the back of the block.

2. The diff needs a rebuild (never test drive a car with the windows down as you cannot hear it!)

She came with nearly a full toyota s/h and 129k

1 owner for 19 years.

Owners manual with wallet and lots of bills.

It has had a new diff cooler, power steering cooler, alternator, power steering pump all recently fitted.

My first job was a good clean as a car always feels better when clean

The next job was the rocker covers and gaskets so new bolts and washers too.

Whilst they were off I stripped and painted them.

I was really pleased how clean inside the engine is showing its had regular oil changes (I have seen so many with Black Death)

I will update this more soon!

The next up was the boot lid. I sourced I non rusty boot lid but in silver so had the glass removed and fully painted in and out on the inside my painter used matte lacquer (used on Harley Davidsons) to keep the oem finish

I also took the opportunity to remedy some slight surface rust on the boot hinge panel with some colour match and 2k lacquer.

The glass was refitted with a new oem seal and new badges including the toyota (Uk only) wording

I was really impressed as it looked like a brand new boot lid as was completely stripped including the wiring!

Next up were the front brakes although the pads were new I wasn’t happy with the asthetic condition of them so replaced them with new calipers oem discs and porterfield pads (it was easier than refurbushing) the difference was amazing so sharp and much improved feel although on removal a couple of pistons were sticking on the old ones.

Next up was the v160 selector shaft seal as it was weeping (a big thank you to Chris Wilson for pointing me in this direction) we also changed the prop shaft seal as a precaution refilling with genuine red getrag v160 oil.

At the same time I changed the selector shaft bushes for solid ones thinking toyota wouldn’t sell the bushes separately (they do!) although I must admit the feel is amazing and more positive and would recommend fitting these as another forum member thought his box needed a rebuild and these solved the issues

To get her ready for the modern classics magazine photo shoot i had a quick detail done on the body work although this is something I would prefer to do myself I didn’t have the time.

You should have saved all this for the practical classic stand you are running next year! I suppose what's better than owning one nice Supra, its got to be two. Think there are a few of you around with two or more Supras. Instead of being the 1:2000 that's got to make you the 1:1000.

Next up was a clean up (back to bare metal) of the sills and chassis/floor.

This had been advised on the mot but luckily it was all just surface corrosion with all rust removed even going around every single spot weld with a small die grinder. Then treated with rust cure to ensure that nothing remained then 4 coats of satin black paint and stone guard plus all cavities filled with wax oil.

My mot tester let me borrow his 2 post ramp when they garage was closed but the arms on the ramp restricted access to areas so I had to finish off other areas at home on a later date.

This also extended into removing the oil cooler in the rear O/S arch to gain full access to the chassis floor area whilst this was removed I cleaned and painted the cooler but it was in excellent condition as it was only 2 years old. I gave the same treatment to pipe work and brackets etc plus the rear arch where the diff cooler area.

I don’t think I am doing the show as no time to organise it!

2000 still seems a lot out there?

Nice project! What color did you paint the valve covers?

Looks like stock!

It’s some base coat I had mixed for a scooter probably 15 years ago it is nearly perfect match. I have done both this car and my red car like this and it holds up great (I refurbished the red car ones probably 14 years ago!)

Just take a rocker cover to an auto paint shop and get them to match it up.

Next up was the magazine photo shoot for modern clsssics magazine.

I had to travel 200 miles for this so stopped over in a premier inn the night before also on the way down detouring to help a fellow forum member look over a Supra he was looking to purchase and wanted an extra pair of eyes

The photo shoot was great as it was I moving shoot with the photographer hanging out of a BMW’s estate to get some pics

Also an addded bonus was getting paid expenses!

I was a little annoyed that the forum didn’t get a mention but journalists never do what they are told

Next up was a full refurbishment of the floor and chassis from the bottom of the bulkhead all the way back to the rear valance.

So dropping the tank, rear subframe, exhaust, shock absorbers, all fuel and brake lines, heat shields, all grommets nuts and bolts etc. Basically if it wasn’t welded in place it was getting removed to be either replaced or cleaned/renovated.

The big strip down started please remember I don’t have a ramp just axle stands and blocks of wood

It all came apart pretty easily I always say Toyotas are logical!

I only remembered to take one picture before I stripped it down

The sub frame out complete with knackered B03B diff

D22A575A-B388-4F95-BAC5-3BAB5775D1CE.jpeg

After a thorough clean down I started removing the corrosion on the underside back to bare metal again removing all traces of rust again even going around each spot weld with a die grinder

This took a very long time!

Whilst I was on with this I dropped parts off at a shot blasters these included all heat shields, hks super dragger cat back system (why make a exhaust with a great stainless back box and mild steel pipe work I will never know!)

Plus I worked on many small brackets and bolts etc. Painting every single nut & bolt with either silver hammerite smooth or pu lacquer.

I had previously bought a refurbished powdercoated polybushed rear subframe (I had it a while as I knew it would come in!) but as ever it wasn’t to my standard so replaced all main adjusting bolts, nuts, washers and fixings (pu lacquered before fitting) and also the aluminium toparms were pu lacquered. All abs sensor clips were removed from the old subframe as they were in much better condition (possibly not very old)

New rear UK brake heat shields were given a extra lick of paint just got added protection.

Also all fuel and brake lines renewed with oem even the fuel return Again all given I good coat of pu lacquer for added protection.

I also had a full set of low mileage oem toyota blisteins with std springs.

Low mileage mint rear Uk calipers and braided TRD lines came off my rolling rsp shell the discs were already excellent.

3 cans of silver vht paint later on the super dragger and 3-4 smooth silver hammerite coats on the exhaust heat shields too plus wet flatting inbetween I obtained the desired finish

Eventually I got her back in paint 4 coats of satin black plus smooth stone guard!

The next jobs are rebuild my B03B diff as I am currently running a JDM big case diff without the cooler and want too keep the car as near as oem as Poss!

Refurbish all the front suspension and subframes hopefully it will not take me all summer!

A glass out respray too fingers crossed

The only other thing that is nagging me is the poly bushed rear subframe is not very oem and I have a low mileage fresh import complete subframe and arms what do you guys and girls think swap it or keep the poly bushed one?

I will update this thread again soon!

  • 6 months later...

It’s been a while since I updated this but am on with replacing/refurbishing the front suspension, subframes, arms, hubs, and refinishing the surrounding chassis/floor and arch area. I will update this very soon when work is underway!

I have just bought new oem rear arch vent covers but I always thought these were discontinued! It’s so good having brand new parts and so simple just bolt them on
