Annabella
Peter is ordering a 20-30m network cable to test, without the mains, to isolate the problem. - - - Updated - - - What speeds now the homeplug is in mains socket?
Chris Wilson
Can't he just put the PC by the router with a short cable as a test?
peter richards
speeds are the same as before on or about 20 , been out all day so will try that later, ill borrow a laptop to try it at the hub
peter richards
right update did the test by the router , results were 60.2 and 16.4. took the plugs out and put back in and just done a test and its 57.2 and 16.4. so what would you say the reason it had got so slow , and now the fastest its been , confusing. going to try wifi , and see what that gives but if it can stay at that speed then ill be happy with it
Ric
The mains plugs are very very patchy, it will 100% be the reason for your slowness. Anything in your house could be affecting the speed, a dodgy tv or other appliance. Usually best practice with homeplugs is that ALL extensions on your house should be surge protected and the home plug should only ever be plugged directly into the wall. Also depends if the wiring is on the same ring. usually upstairs and downstairs are separate so can be poorer performing

It's crap, bin it and run some proper CAT5 cabling. It'll slow down again. If you get the range and through speed from WiFi it'll be more reliable than over the mains stuff, but still hard wiring is King!
peter richards
ok mate thanks see how it goes , as my normal speed was around 36 ish , but last week noticed it had slowed quite a lot and nothing in the house had changed . so for it to be up over 50 now , just keep fingers crossed it stays there

Annabella
Heh glad you've isolated it. Fridges are the worst to interfere as I've found in the past. See how WiFi goes, otherwise it's wired and a new patio

Hitbox Junkie
Internet over mains is temperamental as you've got power flowing and data etc if you run through a exstention cable to its effected even more. Best bet is to run a cable directly. I had a set of wall plugs and had one kill some capacitors inside it a few times in the space of a year. rider
forget the internet over the mains crap I rather like my network over mains as the only other option to jump buildings was a wifi bridge. Its a lot easier to set up a mains adapter network than it would be to fit masts, filters and bridges. In one building though, I'd certainly stick with wired Ethernet or wifi across the network if that is possible. Never liked range extenders though as I found they could drop out of reception and then needed rebooting which always meant physically attending the extender to power off and then back on.
